Pacific City, OR is an absolute jewel of a beach town, north of Lincoln City and South of Manzanita, on a stunning stretch of coastline overlooking its famous Haystack Rock and the Cape Kiwanda Headland. Known amongst generations of Oregonians as a quaint fishing town famous for launching Dory Boats off the main beach, Pacific City has blossomed to include a small-but-mighty “town center” that includes a great coffee shop, popular post-surf taco stand, a grocer to gather supplies (and ice cream!), an upscale ocean view restaurant and bar and a beloved beachfront brewpub where you can drink craft beer with your feet in the sand as you watch the sunset. A stay at a Meredith Lodging Pacific City vacation rental puts you in walking distance of all that this beautiful town has to offer. The unique geography of Pacific City is another thing you will notice when you check-in to your Pacific City vacation rental. It is incredibly unique to have a large river (The Big Nestucca) hug the ocean shoreline so closely and so close to another large river (The Little Nestucca). These rivers near the sea all come together to create a habitat and estuary that attracts all kinds of flora and fauna specific to the Oregon Coast. Wondering what else there is to do when you book a stay in a Meredith Lodging Pacific City vacation rental? We have put together go-to favorites for a weekend spent in one of the best places on the Oregon Coast: Start your day with local coffee and a pastry (or chia pudding!) at Stimulus Coffee + Bakery A hike up the dune of Cape Kiwanda is an exercise-burner the whole family will love, and the view from the top is worth the work! Looking for a less breathless stroll the along the beach? Try a wander along the beautiful sand spit of Bob Straub State park on the South end of town Love to fish? Pacific City delivers opportunities for ocean fishing and river fishing – and we love to visit the “trout-stuffed” Town Lake for an outing with the kiddos. After a day of adventure, there is nothing like ending the day watching the sunset colors change over Haystack Rock – and for beer lovers, we suggest you grab a chair in the sand at the Pelican Pub. Road Trip to Yachats/Waldport – Best Places to Stay, See, Eat and Discover Stunning coastline views, breathtaking sites like Cape Perpetua, Thor’s Well and sunsets over the Alsea Bay Bridge. Award-winning craft beer, popular local restaurants and coffee shops, and a bustling farmer’s market – the beloved beach towns of Yachats and Waldport have something for everyone. Tucked into the southern-most part of Lincoln County these towns are slightly less frequented than larger cities to the North, and that makes all the difference. The drive to these two cities is a beautiful one, and opportunities for scenic vistas and memorable stops abound. We have assembled a few of our favorite stops to make along the way and focused them toward the area South of Lincoln City and north of Waldport/Yachats – and an area rich with natural beauty and an impressive marine science center. Stops to Make Along the Way to Yachats/Waldport: Yaquina Head Lighthouse and Cobble Beach A stop by the Yaquina Head Lighthouse and Cobble Beach is the perfect place to learn a little about the Lighthouse’s historical past and do a little exploring. The lighthouse began operations in August of 1873, when Head Keeper Fayette Crosby climbed the 114 steps to light the wick of the oil burning fixed white light. At that time, the light was on display from sunrise to sunset. Today the lighthouse runs a fully automated Fresnel lens light on commercial power, and it flashes a unique pattern of 2 seconds on, 2 seconds off, 2 seconds on, 14 seconds off, 24 hours a day. The area around the lighthouse is just as interesting as the light inside – and it is a favored spot for natural wildlife. Situated on the migratory path for Gray Whales, visitors may spot them just offshore in early December and January on their travels South – or again in March and April as they return North toward the Bering Sea. Birdwatcher’s also have a lot to be excited about at Yaquina Head. One of the West Coast’s largest nesting colonies of common murre’s resides there along with Brandt’s and pelagic cormorants, western gulls, and bald eagles. Yaquina Head is also home to a mated pair of peregrine falcons, easily spotted most days in the cliffs above the Interpretive Center. For beachcombers, a stroll around the Cobble Beach Tidepools is a must. The beach is named for the dark, smooth rounded stones that cover it and it is an excellent place to explore tidepools. No matter where you explore near Yaquina Head, you will find staff and volunteers nearby to help you make the most of your visit. PLEASE NOTE: Summer 2020, parts of Yaquina Head recreational area are currently closed so check for their hours of availability. Bureau of Land Management Oregon Coast Aquarium The Oregon Coast Aquarium, located in Newport, Oregon, first opened its doors to visitors in 1992. This award-winning facility is the pride of the Central Coast and attracts regional, national, and international visitors to its world-class programs and exhibits. Showcasing marine mammals, seabirds, plants, fish, and invertebrates native to the Oregon coast, The Aquarium endeavors to share its well-informed view of the wealth of coastal resources and promote environmental awareness, conservation, and stewardship with visitors of all ages. Located on 39 picturesque acres overlooking Yaquina Bay and across from Newport, Oregon’s Historic Harbor, The Aquarium makes for an ideal way to spend part of your day when visiting Newport or nearby cities Lincoln City, Depoe Bay, Waldport, and Yachats. The facility is considered one of the nation’s top aquariums, and has been recognized as such by the Travel Channel, USA Today, Coastal Living, Parents Magazine, Forbes Traveler and 10Best.com . Open by reservation this Summer, please check for hours of availability. aquarium.org South Beach State Park Another beautiful stop to make when traveling South on US Highway 101 is South Beach State Park. Sitting next to the Yaquina Bay Bridge, the park begins in south Newport and stretched for several miles down the Oregon Coast, offering many recreational opportunities for visitors. There is an equestrian trail for those wanting to explore on horseback (sunset views on horseback are extra special!) and the Jetty Trail is a beautiful place to go for a jog or take a bike ride. The park also offers a 9-hole disc golf course, horse shoe pits, a playground, and a camping area. When open, park’s Hospitality Center is a great place to get park maps and brochures, shop for souvenirs and check out free discs or horse shoes. Please note the park has limited facilities available this Summer and check online to see what is open before your visit. stateparks.oregon.gov Where to Stay in Yachats/Waldport: Sand and Sky, Waldport You will be charmed from the moment you arrive to this oceanfront, beautiful one-level home with walls of windows facing the sand and sea. The Oregon Coast is a favorite destination for families, with seemingly endless opportunities for discovery and fun. In Lincoln City, there are so many opportunities to put smiles on the faces of those you love. We recently checked in with some local kiddos we know, and they assured us that this list gets their “Dino-mite” (that will make more sense in a minute) stamp of approval. First, renting a kid-friendly house is a great option. When calling or looking online to book your Lincoln City vacation rental, ask about our properties that go the extra mile to make sure kids have fun, too. From stocking in-house games and puzzles to game rooms complete with ping pong tables, pool tables, video games and even air hockey, or a garage stocked with beach toys and beach chairs, our Reservations Team can help you find a home the whole family will love. Make sure you also consider our Oregon Coast Resort Properties Bella Beach and Olivia Beach…with amenities like bike rentals and playgrounds and even a seasonal pool…there are lots of things to keep your favorite kiddos entertained. Once you have settled into your Lincoln City vacation rental, the top of most kids’ lists is getting to the beach as fast as possible. The Oregon Coast offers year-round opportunities to explore and play. Our favorite way to get the post-road trip wiggles out is to hit the beach in Roads End, Lincoln Beach, or Nelscott Beach. Ample parking and miles of pristine beach and incredible views makes it easy for everyone to enjoy their time at any of these locations. Once you have had your fill of sand and sea, it’s fun to head into Lincoln City and explore the shops and restaurants. Here are some of our favorite stops: Say “Hi” to Your Favorite Dinosaurs at Prehistoric! One of our favorite stops is always Prehistoric, a one-of-a-kind shop that will be a huge hit with every dinosaur, rock, and treasure hunter in your life. When you walk in the door you are greeted by the sounds (and movement) of a to-scale baby T-Rex! It’s so real-looking it can be intimidating for little ones, so make sure they are prepared for this unusual hello. Not to worry if dinosaurs are not their thing, though, there is a lot more fun to be had at Prehistoric. From cracking your own geode in their on-site geode cracking machine, to learning as much as you possibly can about rocks and minerals, to their impressive toy dinosaur collection, kids of all ages will find something to be excited about. They also have a world class collection of fossils from all over the world. Their staff is incredibly well-versed on everything in the store and loves to spend time helping kids learn more about the world around them. Our favorite thing to do is “mine for minerals” in their mineral trough and see what treasures we can discover. Make time for local sweet treats. After all of that fun, the kids we know are ready for an afternoon treat. We head straight to Read’s Candy. Located just up the road from Prehistoric, Read’s is exactly what an Oregon Coast candy shop should be…classic, filled with old school favorites and friendly service, too. Stop by for some seafoam and saltwater taffy. If you are lucky one of their candy-makers might be making candy and you can watch how it all comes together. Pizza and Bowling are a great combo! Next up, we recommend checking out a one-stop-fun-stop for fun the whole family can participate in and dinner in the same place…Olde Line Lanes bowling alley and restaurant. This recently remodeled and super charming space offers several lanes of bowling as well as really great food. A late afternoon stop for bowling and dinner means fun and fabulous food for everyone. And no one has to do the dishes! S’mores at the beach are always a good idea. Once you’ve had your fill of bowling and delicious food, we think it would be fun to head to the community fire pit near your Meredith Lodging Lincoln City vacation rental and toast some marshmallows. Meredith Lodging has installed community firepits in our Belhaven, Olivia Beach and Bella Beach neighborhoods! Or, perhaps, you’ve booked a rental home in our collection with its own private firepit. Book your Meredith Lodging vacation by visiting MeredithLodging.com or calling our locally based and experiences Reservations Team at (877)778-9055. And if you are looking to book a home equipped especially for kiddos, just let them know and they will help you find the perfect place. We hope to see you soon!

More people than ever before are Working from Home (WFH) and more kiddos than ever are attending online school. While these circumstances can feel challenging, there is a silver lining –as long as you have an internet connection, you and your household can work from anywhere, and a Meredith Lodging Oregon Coast or Central Oregon vacation rental is a beautiful option! Taking your daily routine on the road can put a smile on everyone’s face and a change of scenery can really boost the spirits of your while family AND improve productivity. Not sure where to start or what to look for when booking a Work From Home (WFH)/Online School getaway? We have assembled our top list of tips to help you get started. Top Tips for Choosing a Work From Home Destination and Preparing for Your Trip Make it easy! Choose a destination that is easily reachable by car. Make it Fun. Choose a location that has lots of activities right outside your door. Accessibility is key to making those school and work breaks (Recess on the beach! Take a bike ride break in Sunriver!) memorable and fun. Location, location, location. Pick a location that places you in the middle of Oregon’s natural beaty, with plenty of fresh air and wide-open spaces right outside your door. Learn on the way AND at your destination. See if there are any sites you can stop and explore safely on the way and make sure to research a little about local historical sites and nature adventures nearby once you arrive. Think about proximity to convenience. Choose a location with a proximity to grocery stores and other conveniences that meet your needs. Hype your destination a little bit before departure. Read up about where you will be going. Let each person choose an activity the whole family can participate in. Having a plan gives everyone something to look forward to! Pack strategically. Remember this is more of a change of scenery than a traditional vacation. You may want to bring more groceries than you usually would to minimize outings, make sure you have the right clothes for the weather forecast. Also consider bringing extra chargers or any other equipment you need to make your WFH/Online school set-up work for you. What to Look for in an Oregon Vacation Rental When Working Remotely/Attending Online School You’ve got bandwidth! Make sure your home has WIFI (99% of Meredith Lodging homes do!) Room to work & Learn. If each person in your party needs to have their own space to work/attend school, be sure to choose a house with enough bedrooms and other workspaces to accommodate that. Many homes have desks in the bedrooms, and you can utilize dining room tables and other tables for workspace, too. A well-equipped kitchen. You will be making lots of meals at home during these times, make sure you have a kitchen and eating area that meets your needs. Traveling with your pod? Make sure each household has dedicated bedrooms and (ideally) a dedicated bathroom for each household and that they are used only by those they are assigned to. Look for homes with outdoor space/outdoor covered spaces you can enjoy. Gathering outside is safe and fun! Look for decks/yards with firepits to keep you cozy – and outdoor hot tubs are always a hit! Book a home with a view! Choose a home with a relaxing view of the ocean, the mountains, the woods, the river, or the golf course – having inspiring views right outside your door makes you relax and feel like you are on vacation, even when you are working. And the short commute to happy hour is enhanced by a beautiful view, too! Look for homes with space for kiddos to play! Many of our homes have pool tables, ping pong tables, foosball – and lots of bikes for family fun. Booking a home with these kinds of spaces puts smiles on those sweet faces! Summer is a great time for road trips, and we highly recommend you consider these out and back outings on your next #staywithmeredith in Central Oregon. Discover something new about Oregon this Summer! Recommended Oregon Destination for Your Summer Road Trip The Painted Hills One look at this breathtaking landscape and you will understand why it draws photographers from all over the world for the study it provides on light and nature, and its striking landscape. The Painted Hills (aka layers of mountains and earth representing millions of years of history) in sunset colors rise against a bright blue sky. The Painted Hills are one of three units that make up the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument. Distance from Bend: 1 hour and 45 minutes. Cascade Lakes National Scenic Byway This beautiful, 66-mile stretch of scenic highway that runs through Deschutes and Klamath Counties is a wonderful day trip from Bend and Sunriver and includes many opportunities to stop and see the sites along the way. Favorite stops include Benham Falls, Dillon Falls and Lava Island Falls (along the Deschutes River Trail), Mt. Bachelor and Dutchman Flats Sno Park (open year round); Sparks Lake, Todd Lake and Devil’s Lake; Elk Lake Resort (where it’s easy to rent boats, kayaks, canoes and more to enjoy the lake); and Crane Prairie, famous for its large “Crainbow” trout and abundant surrounding natural wildlife including osprey, bald eagles, egrets, cormorants and owls. The drive from Bend to Crain Prairie Reservoir takes 50 minutes. McKenzie Pass-Santiam Pass Scenic Byway McKenzie Pass and Santiam pass joins together to make one of the most picturesque drives in the State of Oregon. Beginning just northwest of Bend our first stop on the loop is always Sisters, with its stunning mountain views, charming storefronts, and vibrant arts community. The Santiam Bypass winds its way its way through beautiful mountain terrain and offers many sites to see, including Black Butte, Camp Sherman on the Metolius River, parts of Suttle Lake and the Pacific Crest Trail as well as Lost Lake, which fills every Spring only to be gone by Fall. Continuing the loop on to the McKenzie Highway Scenic Bypass (a favorite cycling destination), you can find your way to local-favorite Proxy Falls. These two-part falls tumble over forest and fauna makes for a refreshing stop before you get back on the road to continue exploring. As you head back toward sisters amidst stunning views and the North Sister and Middle Sister, we suggest a stop at the Dee Wright Observatory. From this location you can see many of the Cascade Peaks and a particularly close-up and powerful view of Mt. Washington. As you head back down the road into Sisters, keep an eye out for Windy Point for one more breathtaking view. Driving the entire loop from bend and making stops along the way is an easy ½ day trip of 4-5 hours. Crater Lake National Park Well Known for its bright blue hue and picturesque Lodge, Crater Lake National Park is also within easy striking distance when you stay with Meredith Lodging in Bend or Sunriver. It is a bit of a longer trip, making it a full day’s outing, but our guests all say it is worth the extra time. Arriving at Crater Lake in the Summer months and you will find hiking trails along the shoreline, abundant natural beauty and many scenic views of Wizard Island and Phantom Ship, formed more than 7700 years ago when a violent volcanic eruption collapsed an ancient volcano, creating Crater Lake. It is always fun to tick a National Park off your list, and we suggest a stop at Crater Lake Lodge dining room, Annie Creek Restaurant, or the Rim Village Cafe before you head for home to Bend or Sunriver. From Bend to Crater Lake is a scenic 2-hour drive. Newberry National Volcanic Monument / Newberry Caldera A lot closer to your Meredith Lodging Bend or Sunriver vacation rental is a day trip to Newberry Caldera. This national monument was created in 1990 and included more than 54,000 acres of lakes, lava flows, and stunning geologic sites. Paulina Peak is the highest point within the monument at (7,985 ft, and a steep/fast vertical climb if you are hiking), and offers beautiful vistas of the Cascades, the High Desert and Newberry Caldera. The Newberry Caldera stretches more than 17 miles across the 1200 square mile volcano that is still both seismically and geothermically active today, offering visitors memorable views of cinder cones and vents (more than 400), rhyolite flows of obsidian and basalt flows. Our favorite activities include the hike from the edge of Paulina Lake to the rustic Paulina Springs hot springs and a stop at The Big Obsidian Flow, featuring more than 170 million cubic yards of rugged pumice and glass-like obsidian. The Newberry Caldera is a quick 18-minute drive from Bend and only 12 minutes from Sunriver. The opportunities for adventure are endless when you stay with Meredith Lodging in Central Oregon. Meredith Lodging’s Central Oregon Headquarters Office is located in Bend, Oregon and our local employees love living in Bend because of all the adventure just outside their door. Many of Bend’s most-loved sites get pretty crowded in the Spring and Summer months, but there are a few places that are remain on our “best-kept-secrets list and we want to share those with our Meredith Lodging family. These are some of our favorite places and we hope they will be yours, too! No Name Lake No Name Lake is a local favorite and as soon as you see the blue-green jade-colored water and its picturesque surroundings you will understand why. The trail to the lake is an easy one and the elevation gain is gradual. It is long, though, and has a short scramble at the end up the creek bed, which accounts for its more difficult category, but other than those two factors, the trek is easy to moderate. Most parts of this hike do not have tree cover, so you will want to pack your hats and sunscreen – and mosquito repellant if going in the summer months. The wildflowers are beautiful in July! Tenas Lakes This 4.9-mile out and back is moderately busy most of the time. The lake is loved by locals and the trail to get there is appropriate for all skill levels. Bird watchers, this hike is for you as its also considered a good birding location. Dogs are allowed on leash. This trip is best taken from June to November. Hidden Forest and Arnold Ice Cave Nothing cooler than an ice cave! See what we did there…This hike is close to Bend and is a 0.8 mile out and back that is a good bet for all skill levels. You will be rewarded with views of beautiful wild flowers and lots of good bird sightings as well as the chance to explore some cool Oregon caves. Please note the road to access the trail is bumpy. East Lake Hot Springs This adventure is within the Newberry Crater recreational area, and is a local favorite because it is less crowded than nearby Paulina Lake Hot Springs. The trail to East Lake Hot Springs is a 3.4 mile moderately trafficked out and back trail located near La Pine, Oregon. Once you reach your destination you will be rewarded with beautiful lake views and incredibly hot springs (100-120 degrees!) and their classic sulfur smell. Locals love to dig their own pools and combine spring water and lake water to get to the perfect temperature. The trail is best used for hiking, walking, nature trips, from May until October. Dogs are allowed. After a day full of adventures, return to your perfect home-base – your Meredith Lodging Bend or Sunriver vacation rental.
