Over 370,000 bricks were used to build the structure, which was completed in the late 1800’s. The light has been active since 1873, when the days of oil burning wicks were commonplace. Located at the westernmost point of the Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area, the lighthouse has withstood the test of weather and time. Now, there is a fully automated Fresnel lens that flashes 24 hours a day, guiding ships safely past the rugged Oregon coastline. Admission and Tours Today, visitors from near and far are drawn to Yaquina Head and its famous lighthouse. If you are planning a trip to the Oregon Coast, you must stop by for a tour. Your local guide will tell you about the history of the lighthouse, how it is operated, and stories from long ago. As you ascend the winding, 114-step staircase, it’s easy to imagine that you’ve been transported to a previous era yourself. Don’t forget to bring your camera! Admission to the park is just $7 for cars, and the park grounds are open from 8 a.m. until sunset.
