The Oregon Coast is a favorite destination for families, with seemingly endless opportunities for discovery and fun. In Lincoln City, there are so many opportunities to put smiles on the faces of those you love. We recently checked in with some local kiddos we know, and they assured us that this list gets their “Dino-mite” (that will make more sense in a minute) stamp of approval. First, renting a kid-friendly house is a great option. Once you have had your fill of sand and sea, it’s fun to head into Lincoln City and explore the shops and restaurants. Here are some of our favorite stops: Say “Hi” to Your Favorite Dinosaurs at Prehistoric! One of our favorite stops is always Prehistoric, a one-of-a-kind shop that will be a huge hit with every dinosaur, rock, and treasure hunter in your life. When you walk in the door you are greeted by the sounds (and movement) of a to-scale baby T-Rex! It’s so real-looking it can be intimidating for little ones, so make sure they are prepared for this unusual hello. Not to worry if dinosaurs are not their thing, though, there is a lot more fun to be had at Prehistoric. From cracking your own geode in their on-site geode cracking machine, to learning as much as you possibly can about rocks and minerals, to their impressive toy dinosaur collection, kids of all ages will find something to be excited about. They also have a world class collection of fossils from all over the world. Their staff is incredibly well-versed on everything in the store and loves to spend time helping kids learn more about the world around them. Our favorite thing to do is “mine for minerals” in their mineral trough and see what treasures we can discover. Make time for local sweet treats. After all of that fun, the kids we know are ready for an afternoon treat. We head straight to Read’s Candy. Located just up the road from Prehistoric, Read’s is exactly what an Oregon Coast candy shop should be…classic, filled with old school favorites and friendly service, too. Stop by for some seafoam and saltwater taffy. If you are lucky one of their candy-makers might be making candy and you can watch how it all comes together. Pizza and Bowling are a great combo! Next up, we recommend checking out a one-stop-fun-stop for fun the whole family can participate in and dinner in the same place…Olde Line Lanes bowling alley and restaurant. This recently remodeled and super charming space offers several lanes of bowling as well as really great food. A late afternoon stop for bowling and dinner means fun and fabulous food for everyone. And no one has to do the dishes! S’mores at the beach are always a good idea. Meredith Lodging Announces Funding is Complete for the Lincoln City Police K-9 Project Lincoln City, OR. Meredith Lodging (along with Oksenholt Capital) announced this week that they have completed their announced matching gifts campaign and fully funded the Lincoln City Police K9 project. The mission of the Lincoln City Police K-9 Project is to promote a positive relationship between the community and the Lincoln City Police Department through education on the modern-day use of the Law Enforcement K-9. The matching funds effort, launched by Meredith Lodging in the late Fall, raised $20,000 to complete program funding. Jordan Grant, Vice President of Operations for Meredith Lodging shared, “We are so proud to be part of a community that comes together around good causes that benefit all of us, like the Lincoln City Police K-9 project. Once we announced the matching funds campaign, and the end of year deadline, local citizens really stepped up and we met our goal in late December. Meredith Lodging continues to be committed to investing in the success of the communities where our employees live and work, and where our Meredith Lodging owners have homes.” “We are thrilled that this important effort is fully funded and so grateful to the community of Lincoln City and to Meredith Lodging for stepping up to make it happen,” commented Officer Holly Blakely, who is leading up the project for the Lincoln City Police. “Now we can formally launch the program and begin to benefit the local community with a stronger K-9 protection program.” The fully funded program will cover the cost of K-9 handler courses and certifications, as well as necessary equipment for the dogs, such as K-9 vests, transportation equipment and kennels. Ski And Stay in Bend at Mt. Bachelor Village by Meredith Lodging Winter is a wonderful time of year in Central Oregon! The mountain tops are blanketed with snow and the winter sport community awakes each morning with growing excitement– ski season is here at last! When seeking a destination for exhilarating winter recreation, Mt. Bachelor Ski Resort is the place to be.  Mt. Bachelor Ski Resort is an excellent destination for snowboarding or alpine-style (downhill) skiing. It rates consistently as the top PNW ski resort. There are two primary points that make this ski resort extra special. One is that Mt. Bachelor is categorized as a volcano (and an active one at that!). The last eruption was about 9,500 years ago, so this should not be a cause for concern. Secondly, when the weather allows, you can ride the Summit chairlift to the top of the mountain and take your pick of 360 degrees of ski route options! For a challenging route, hit the terrain on the back of the mountain (when conditions allow). Chutes and a cat track provide lots of diversity as you make your way down to the Cloudchaser lift to the East or the Northwest lift to the West. Always exercise caution, especially on a challenging route. The backside of the mountain is considered backcountry terrain and should only be navigated by expert-level snowboarders or skiers. This ski resort has 16 different chairlifts and 12 of the lifts have chairs that hold four passengers and run at high speeds. There are also three different lodges available. Two of the lodges are located at the base of Mt. Bachelor and one is situated midway up the mountain (a luxurious addition!). Most of the mountain will fit intermediate and beginner skill levels (in addition to the more challenging options). There is a multitude of meandering groomed trails, outstanding ski runs through the trees, and plenty of great powder. There is something for everyone at every skill level – the whole family is sure to have a blast! And what if alpine skiing is not your preference? There are plenty of fantastic cross-country trails for all skill ranges. Want to enjoy the mountain like a local? Wake up as early as possible to beat the rush! A single-lane road creates quite the traffic jam for those who did not rise before opening time at the mountain. Take your breakfast and coffee to go and enjoy watching the ski operations open for the day. Then, you just might have a few fresh runs all to yourself!

Read’s Candy It will not be a tough sell to talk the kiddos in to visiting a candy store – rain OR shine! Read’s Homemade Candies is a Lincoln City institution and one of the only places on the coast that still makes their taffy by hand, in-house.  The kids will love watching the candy being made and listening to the whir-of the wrapping machines. September still feels like Summer in Central Oregon.  Now is a great time to plan a getaway and soak up those sunny skies (and temps still in the 70’s!) before Fall truly arrives. We’ve gathered up some of our can’t miss events for the month of September.  When you stay with Meredith Lodging in one of our vacation rentals in Bend, Sunriver or up at Mt. Bachelor Village, you have the perfect home base to get the most out of Central Oregon in September! Bend Farmer’s Market September brings the bounty to the Bend Farmer’s Market.  This market features vendors selling fruits and vegetables, meat and poultry, dairy products, sweet treats, kombucha, coffee and farm-fresh flowers, among many other local goods. Stop by Brooks Alley every Wednesday from 2PM to 6PM, until October.   Fourth Friday in Sisters Head to the beloved town of sisters the fourth Friday of each month for their monthly celebration of all things art! Twenty local galleries open their doors for this free event that also features music, demonstrations/how-to sessions and food and drink.  This event was started by the Sisters Arts Association based in their belief that a healthy arts community helps support a thriving town. Monkey Face Half Marathon – Smith Rock If you are a runner, or if you love a runner, consider checking out the Monkey Face Half Marathon at Smith Rock.  It’s hard to imagine a more beautiful setting than Smith Rock as Summer Turns to Fall – and it’s hard to imagine a more challenging course than Monkey Face! This popular event is sold out for this year, but you are welcome to cheer on the runners! After the race participants and supporters can celebrate with a refreshing beverage from race sponsor Deschutes Brewery. Ten Barrel Wave Competition This September marks the first ever 10 Barrel Wave Competition at Bend Whitewater Park on September 21 at noon.  Cheer on as some of Bend’s best local surfers vie for “King and Queen of the Wave”! The event will feature music, a beer garden, games and prizes. All proceeds from the competition will go to support Bend Whitewater Park.  The event is free to people of all ages and well-behaved on-leash pups, too! Bend Oktoberfest Celebrate this Fall tradition and raise money to help keep Downtown Bend vibrant when you attend the Bend Oktoberfest celebration September 20-21, featuring beer offerings from ten local craft brewers.  Festivities include a family Fun Festival, Cornhole, Ping Pong, Lawn Jenga, Food Court, many Vendors and Live Music, a Hammerschlagen contest, a yodeling competition, and the always-popular Weiner Dog race! This is an event the whole family can enjoy! Sunriver vacations are a family-friendly dream anytime of year!  We love to hike and bike and swim at the SHARC in the Summer and sled the hills and head up to Mt. Bachelor for some of Oregon’s best skiing and snowboarding in the Winter.  No matter what time of year, we love to fuel up with coffee and a quick breakfast before we get going. Wild Wood Coffee House Coffee is the first thing we think about when we wake up on vacation.  We love to get the family loaded up on the bikes and head into Sunriver for a coffee and a freshly baked cinnamon roll or scone at  Wild Wood Coffee House.  Located just outside the Village, this cozy, uncrowded cafe offers ease and convenience….and did we mention the daily homemade cinnamon rolls?  Brewed Awakenings Another favorite coffee outlet is Brewed Awakenings Coffee Roasters in The Village at Sunriver.  We love their selection of yummy coffee drinks and their breakfast sandwiches are delicious and a great on-the-go option. What is there to love about a family vacation at Bella Beach Resort? EVERYTHING!  When you drive in to this peaceful, seaside community just South of Lincoln City, time starts to slow down.  You breathe deeper, the sound of waves crashing becomes the soundtrack to your weekend and you can park the car and not drive again till you depart if you want to – there is plenty to keep you busy! We love spending family weekends at Bella Beachfor that very reason – all of the fun we can have right outside our door or in short walking distance. Meredith Lodging has been hard at work this summer making Bella Beach even more enjoyable for visiting Guests and we were excited to check out their recent property improvements and added amenities…all of which made it even easier for our whole family to have fun! We have captured our “Favorite Five” family-friendly activities for you to keep in mind the next time you and your family visit this beautiful seaside resort and #staywithmeredith.  5.  An on-property playground.  The minute we arrive, the kids want to head to the playground and basketball court ASAP – and we do not mind one bit!  This is a great place for kids to get the wiggles out after a car ride and also a great place for all of us to meet families and other kids visiting Bella Beach Resort. We pack our basketball and wall-ball every time we visit for this reason!  4.  Community greenspace and picnic tables.   One of our favorite places to eat when we visit Bella Beach Resort is…Bella Beach Resort.  We love the ease (and cost-savings!) of packing a picnic to enjoy in the community greenspace.  There is plenty of room for the kiddos and our pup to play (on-leash) and we love to avail ourselves of the picturesque picnic benches to settle in for lunch or dinner.  We also love to sneak away to this spot for early morning coffee.    3.  The New Community Firepit and Sand-deck (coming soon).   Grab the kiddos for an evening s-mores session and sand and lawn games…every night!  S’mores supplies can be purchased at the Meredith Lodging on-property office and sand toys and lawn games can be checked out, too.  Parents can enjoy a drink by the fire and kiddos can play – a perfect pairing of summer fun for everyone.   2. The new fleet of Bella Beach Resort Dutch Cruiser bikes for the whole family!  We love taking a ride around the neighborhood as a family and our kiddos would make laps around the neighborhood all day.  Now it’s even easier for the whole family to cruise around, thanks to the Dutch-style cruiser bikes available to all Guests who book through Meredith Lodging.  We love that we don’t have to bring our own bikes from home, and these beautiful cruisers with their wooden baskets made for a great family photo, too!  1. THE BEACH!   While each member of our family has favorite things to do at Bella Beach Resort – the overall winner is easy for all of us – THAT BEACH! Sand Dollar Home – A Magical A-frame on the Oregon Coast, Where Pups are Allowed!

Meredith Lodging’s beloved Sand Dollar Home sits just above beautiful Roads End beach – with only a grassy oceanfront yard) perfect for pups!) between you and the sand. I have long been a fan of A-frames in general…and one ON the beach where we could also bring our pup along for the weekend? SOLD….and booked as soon as we could find an open date.   When we pulled up to Sand Dollar home, I was struck by the cozy size of this oceanfront cabin…and as soon as I walked in the door I was struck by everything else about it – amazing light, luxury finishes and magazine-worthy décor – and that wall of windows! For a cozy cabin, Sand Dollar has one of the biggest views I have ever seen!   We unpacked as the sun came out – and once we realized we were going to have full sun for the rest of the evening, we cancelled our reservations for dinner our in Lincoln City and instead my husband made the quick run to Barnacle Bill’s Seafood Market for some fresh Dungeness crab, salt and pepper prawns and smoked salmon.  Oceanfront seafood picnic for two, please!   While my husband was away getting dinner, I unpacked and settled into the undeniable luxury of Sand Dollar.  This cozy space literally has everything you could ever want for a perfect weekend away… from the aforementioned fine furnishings to a spa-like shower, impressive little kitchen and luxury linens atop the coziest beds.  Most of all the sounds of the ocean outside your door and the views out the window…it’s impossible not to feel like you have arrived someplace truly special.  I felt like I have left the chaos of the workweek behind and stepped into the pages of some perfectly curated “Weekend Away” magazine.   The door opening downstairs let me know dinner had arrived and it was time to set up for sunset.  We took our pup out for a romp on the oceanfront grassy yard and realized maybe the only thing happier than a dog on the beach is a dog with a front yard on the beach!  We moved our perfectly-weathered and very comfortable deck chairs and side tables to the lawn, grabbed a beach blanket form the well-stocked cedar chest and settled in for a sunset seafood feast.   What is it about having the time to watch the sun drop all the way into the sea that makes time seem to actually slow down a bit? As we washed our delicious seafood, cocktail sauce and saltine cracker feast down with some champagne, we had just enough left to raise a glass to the spectacular sunset and our good luck.   Off to bed upstairs on the king-size extra comfortable bed and Belgian linen bedding and the cozy dog bed we brought along with us and the three of us were asleep in no time.   The next morning, I had no expectations of good weather after we were treated to a late season sunset the night before.  I woke up just before sunrise and realized that Roads End beach was starting to be awash in color. The tide had left behind perfect pools of water that were now reflecting pink and gold.  I remembered why people say there is nothing quite like being oceanfront – it’s like the best movie in the world playing out before you all day. We fired up some local favorite Left Coast Coffee in the coffee maker and watched the sunrise show for a bit before we headed out for a beach stroll with the pup and to have a look for the famous “Finders Keepers” glass floats.  Local glass-blowing artists hide glass floats year-round in Lincoln City – and if you are lucky enough to find one, its. yours for the taking.  We struck out on the glass floats, but struck lucky when we headed back home to watch the beach come to life from our cozy Sand Dollar perch…outside it was sunny and cold and inside it was all about getting cozy with a side of ocean waves.   After a lazy morning, we decided we should venture out at least a bit and headed to Blackfish Cafe for lunch (the place we were supposed to go the night before).  We love this charming café, located right along Hwy 101 as you head south through town.  While I have never had a bad meal here, what keeps me coming back is the salmon Caesar salad…the best I have ever had!   Feeling energized we headed to another favorite local stop – Scout Northwest Trading Company. This well curated collection has something for everyone from outdoor gear, to local foods and cute clothing – but today we were here for a very important purchase – our first Yeti cooler.  If you are in the market for anything Yeti, Scout is the place to go – they have one of the best selections of coolers, tumblers and camp cups we have seen!  After a lot of looking we quickly settled on a Yeti Roadie and headed home to Sand Dollar.   We were treated to another spectacular sunset and took that as a sign that we were simply not supposed to leave this magical little cabin for the rest of the weekend – and chose to spend out the rest of the weekend right there.  From frequent strolls with our pup on Roads End Beach to cooking locally-caught fish in the well-equipped kitchen, to toasting the sunset from our deck and raising a cup of coffee to the sunrise…Meredith Lodging’s pet-friendly Sand Dollar home is one of the most magical places we have ever stayed.  We can’t wait to check-in to Sand Dollar again soon!

The headlands to the north, including the astonishing Cape Perpetua, have more scenic stops per mile than most anywhere on the coast, with churning chasms, spouting horns, sea caves, old-growth trees and basalt cliffs that plunge into the sea. Ona, a seafood restaurant that hugs the Yachats River estuary with ocean views, is an elegant choice. You might also like to try Luna Sea Fish House, a restaurant that features the day’s catch: the owners are a Yachats fishing family. Want something especially family friendly? Bend, Oregon Hiking: Our Top 10 Bend Hiking Trails

Bend is a summer hiking paradise. There’s nothing better than spending a day in the Cascades with your friends and family. Get out and explore.  Here are some some of the trails we like to hike near Bend: Oregon Desert Trail The Oregon Desert Trail passes through some of the most breathtaking natural areas on the state, including the Oregon Badlands Wilderness, Hart Mountain National Antelope Refuge, Steens Mountain, and Pueblo Mountains. Pilot Butte State Park Come and visit an ancient cinder cone located just east of Bend. Hiking up and around on one of three routes is a must. The trails wind through stands of juniper and sage bushes. All of the paths lead to the top. Prepare for a stunning panoramic after reaching the top. Upper Deschutes River Trail Located 7 miles south of Bend, the Deschutes River Trail starts at the Meadow Day Use Area and is accessible via several access points and parking areas. Lava Island, Big Eddy, Aspen, Dillon Falls, Slough, Benham Falls West, and Benham Falls East all have parking areas and access points to the Deschutes River Trail. From May 15 through September 15, dogs must be on a leash.There are certain sections that are designated to foot traffic only, so mountain bikers follow the signs and stay on your own designated trails.  Lava Butte Meet the 3.8-mile out-and-back trail near Sunriver, Oregon, and make friends. Considered a moderate difficulty path, it takes on average 1 h 41 min to complete. This is a popular walking and hiking route, but you may still get some peace and quiet at certain times of the day. The ideal months to go trekking here are March through November. Tumalo Falls Trail Tumalo Falls is one of the most popular hikes in Central Oregon.. The falls are beautiful, and the trail is easy to follow. It’s only about a mile round trip. Todd Lake Trail In the summer, Todd Lake is a fantastic place to get away from the heat. The lake is encircled by trees, and there are several fishing spots available. There’s a three-mile round trip trek to the lake. This is a short stroll from the parking lot where you can take in the views of Broken Top. During peak season, this area becomes very popular for picnics and fishing. Sparks Lake Sparks Lake is another great option for a summer hike. The trail around the lake is easy, and you’ll be rewarded with stunning views of Mt. Bachelor and South Sister. Green Lakes The trailhead offers views of South Sister, Broken Top, and Mount Bachelor. On the journey, you’ll pass several waterfalls that drop from cliffs up to 100 feet high. At the higher elevations, there are extensive meadows with wooded areas surrounding them on both sides. On the route’s western slope there are two switchbacks; they are the only switchbacks you encounter on the entire journey. You will pass an outlet creek from the lakes near the end of the trek, with a ridge on the other side containing obsidian. There are views of South Sister, Broken Top, and Mount Bachelor at both ends of this hike. Hiking Devil’s Lake Discover this 1.6-mile out-and-back path in Sisters, Oregon. It’s considered a Moderate trek, taking around 36 minutes to complete on average. This is a popular trail for birding, camping, and hiking, but you may still get some peace and quiet at quieter times of day. The peak season is May through October, and dogs are permitted but must be kept on a leash. Mirror Lake Sisters Mirror Lake Loop is an easy, scenic hike that takes you around Sisters Mirror Lake. Mt. Bachelor Village is ideally located to numerous hiking trails along the Cascade Lakes Hwy.  Meander down to the Deschutes river trail and take in the sights of the towering pines and wildlife or visit the Three Sisters Wilderness for breathtaking views of the Cascade Mountains. Here are our top 5 family friendly hikes in Bend: Deschutes River Trail The Deschutes River Trail can be easily accessed directly from Mt. Bachelor Village resort.  This trail is great for kids of any age! Benham Falls Pack your lunch and snacks for your kiddos and spend the afternoon hiking along the Deschutes River and checking out a few waterfalls along the trail.  There are a few sloughs and picnic areas along the way which are great resting points for the family. Tumalo Falls Bend’s iconic and year round accessible trail.  Snowshoe or cross country ski in the winter to view the falls which is about 2.5 miles from the parking area.  In the warmer months, you can park closer to the falls and continue your hike for several miles. Todd Lake This trail is open during the summer months only and is fantastic for all ages.  The trail is a 1.5 mile loop around the lake with little elevation gain.  You will not be disappointed in the wildflowers and mountain views.  If you are lucky enough to visit in early summer, you will see hundreds of baby frogs! Pilot Butte Located in the center of Bend, sits Pilot Butte.  The Butte is open year round and is about 1.5 miles round trip.  During the summer months, you can drive to the top of the butte for 360 degree views of Bend!  Often times you can see all of the mountains in the Cascades, along with Mt.
