Imagine this … Checking in to a cozy cabin in the mountains or getting away to a perfect oceanfront abode for your next Thanksgiving … sounds dreamy, right? You and your guests will love the cooler weather (perfect for getting cozy by the fire!) and seeing your holiday celebration (and each other!) in a new light because you are celebrating in a new place. There are so many benefits to planning your Thanksgiving or other holiday getaway by booking a beautiful, private, and professionally cleaned Meredith Lodging Oregon Coast or Central Oregon vacation rental. Ready to plan your perfect holiday getaway? Your best bet is to book early while the selection of homes is still great! We’ve put together our best tips for taking your Thanksgiving celebration on the road with Meredith Lodging this year: (1) Choose Your Perfect Home Away from Home. Are you planning to cook up a feast? Make sure you love the kitchen in the home you choose! Also, think about what says “vacation” to you … a fireplace, a beautiful view, a cozy nook for reading a book … or a spa-like bathtub? We can help you find a home that has all the features and amenities you are looking for. And if your favorite “dish” to make for Thanksgiving is reservations, we can help you make sure to book a home that is close to the many award-winning and delicious dining options in Central Oregon and along the Oregon Coast. (2) Room to Celebrate – and to Re-charge. Many families and friends return each year to celebrate the holidays on the Oregon Coast or in Central Oregon. Two things they tell us they always look for are great gathering spaces to bring everyone together and plenty of well-appointed bedrooms, bathrooms, and other spaces for everyone to comfortably retreat to, so they can rest and re-charge as well. Book a home that offers features and amenities like a large dining space inside and out, plenty of seating around the fire, and comfy bedrooms and baths for everyone in your group. (3) Bring the “Taste of Home” with You! Plan to make some cherished family recipes while you enjoy your getaway. Staying at the coast? Consider adding some seafood-inspired touches to your feast! Giving thanks in Central Oregon? Pack up some apres-ski, snow, and cold goodies to enjoy and warm-up with your loved ones. We are sharing a few of our team’s favorite recipes below: Best Hot Chocolate Ever Recipe by Bon Apetit. We think the title says it all. Cheers! We think the title says it all. Cheers! Oregon Home Magazine’s Publisher Courtney Kutzman made this amazing Smoked Crab Dip, when she and her family stayed with us in South Beach. It has become a favorite for many! Please note the recipe is at the end of the article and is worth the read! Our favorite seafood stop is always Barnacle Bill’s in Lincoln City – and while this might not technically qualify as a recipe (because they make it for you), it’s just not Thanksgiving for us unless Barnacle Bill’s smoked salmon dip is on the table! A couple of staff members in our Bend office recommended this recipe for scalloped potatoes and wow – it’s a game changer! Takes a little bit of time to make but is always a hit with the whole table. Creamy Herbed Potatoes by the Pioneer Woman. Looking for a no-fail turkey recipe?!? A member of our leadership team swears by the Williams Sonoma “Willie-Bird” pre-brined turkey and after trying it, we have to say – we agree! It is a bit of a splurge, and a delicious one, too! Want to serve a dessert that is both new and deliciously familiar?!? Our social media lead loves to make this Upside Down Pumpkin Pecan Pie with Caramel Sauce. She has been bringing it to her celebrations for 10 years at the strong request of her guests! (4) Get Moving on the “Big Day.” Take advantage of the fact that you are celebrating in the mountains or at the beach and plan a Thanksgiving morning outing to get everyone some exercise before all that eating. A family bike ride, a hike, a walk along the beach – all will fill your lungs with fresh air and your hearts with happy memories before you fill your bellies with tasty food. (5) Most importantly – Share the Gratitude! Many of our guests find that celebrating Thanksgiving in a new, beautiful place makes them even more grateful than usual for the blessings in their life. We are BIG fans of a round-robin session at the dinner table, giving everyone a chance to say what they are grateful for. One family’s take on it is particularly great for a holiday getaway – they ask each person at the table to say something “old” that they are grateful for as well as a new, recent reason they are feeling the love, related to the vacation. This gets everyone in a happy mood before you dig into all that food. Plan an extra-Happy Thanksgiving with Meredith Lodging this year. You can book your perfect holiday getaway online at MeredithLodging.com or call our Reservations Team to help you plan the perfect stay at 877.778.9055.
Top Fall Favorites on the Oregon Coast Three of the best-kept secrets on the Oregon Coast are September, October, and November! Locals and visitors alike know that Fall is one of the most beautiful times on the coast. Vibrant yellow and orange hues dot the landscape against Oregon’s signature old-growth evergreens, temperatures are often mild and sunny – and there is the occasional Fall storm that gives you the perfect excuse to spend hours sitting by the fire with a good book. It is easy to make memories this time of year, too – rain or shine. From whale watching to wine tasting to marveling at the fall foliage on one of the Coast’s many hikes, you will find plenty to discover on the Oregon Coast in Autumn. Looking to plan a memorable Fall getaway? We have put together a shortlist of our Fall favorites on the Oregon Coast to help you plan the perfect trip. Hiking Along the Oregon Coast Hiking in Oregon any time of the year is stunning, but with fewer crowds, epic scenery and the beginning of storm season, there is a lot to love about hiking along the Coast in the fall. Check out 15 iconic hikes here. Wine Tasting The Oregon wine scene is not just located in and around the Willamette Valley. The location and climate of the Oregon Coast provides perfect conditions for many varietals and local winemakers love it! Sip, savor and see why Oregon winemakers are making their mark on the wine world. Here are two of our favorites: Nehalem Bay Winery – Founded in 1974 in the historic Mohler Creamery building, this small, family- owned winery offers a wide selection of fruit wines along with many traditional red and white grape varietals. Stop in for a taste and soak in the history of one of the ten oldest wineries in the State of Oregon and the first winery on the Oregon Coast. The Winery at Manzanita – Let an afternoon turn into a cozy evening at this kid and dog-friendly winery. The wines are small batch here – focusing on quality over quantity. They serve flights, so you can try all the styles, as well as craft Pacific Northwest beer and cider. You can also order DIY smores kit to toast over the fire pits. Order a bottle, settle in on an Adirondack chair and take in the views at this dreamy locale. Find out more things to do in Manzanita from our Area Guide > Visit Yakina Head Lighthouse A trip down the Oregon Coast’s Highway 101 is not complete without stopping to view its historic lighthouses. While anytime of the year is great to visit these iconic beacons, a trip in fall can be quite memorable with dramatic skies, breaching whales and fewer crowds. One of our favorite stops is the Yakina Head Lighthouse. Standing 93 feet tall, this lighthouse has been guiding ships along the west coast since it was first lit in 1873. There are also tide pools to explore and scenic trails to discover nearby, making for an easy outing the whole family will enjoy. With its expansive beaches, romantic vistas, and unrivaled scenery, it’s no surprise that many people consider horseback riding in this little slice of paradise a bucket list item. Things to Consider While Horseback Riding near Manzanita Whether you head over to Nehalem Bay State Park for a beach trail ride or take an excursion through private logging roads, there are a few things to keep in mind as you set off on an Oregon Coast horseback riding escapade. As you ride through the tidal-washed sands of the shoreline, you’ll want to dress in waterproof layers, even during the summer. Long pants will come in handy to prevent chafing, and sturdy closed-toe shoes will be necessary to protect your feet. Finally, having a bag large enough for your clothes, a water bottle, and a few snacks to prevent dehydration and hunger is crucial. Please follow these rules carefully and celebrate responsibly so we can all enjoy a safe Fourth of July and protect our beautiful state! Please see below for more info on safety protocols. The Oregon State Fire Marshall encourages everyone to use the four B’s of safe fireworks use: Be prepared before lighting fireworks Use only legal fireworks available at licensed sales locations. Store fireworks out of children’s reach. Always read and follow the directions on the firework’s label. Place pets indoors; they are easily frightened by fireworks. Always have water handy (a garden hose or a bucket of water). Be safe when lighting fireworks Only adults should light fireworks. Keep matches and lighters away from children. Only use fireworks outdoors and away from combustibles. Light one firework at a time and move away quickly. Keep children and pets away from fireworks. Do not throw fireworks or hold them in your hand. Be responsible after lighting fireworks Soak used fireworks thoroughly in a bucket of water. Dispose of used fireworks and debris properly. Never re-light a “dud” firework. (Wait at least 15–20 minutes and then soak it in a bucket of water.) Be aware Use only legal fireworks. Use fireworks only where it is legal to do so. Exploring the Coast | Beachcombing in Oregon Beachcombing in Oregon is a fun and relaxing way to explore the Coast. The Beaver State has an abundance of oceanfront playgrounds rife with seashells, sand dollars, sea glass, and other obscure treasures. What’s more, Meredith Lodging has an impressive collection of vacation rentals in Seaside, Oregon, one of the region’s most well-known destinations for beachcombing in the Pacific Northwest. So, to help acquaint you with this popular yet timeless pastime, we put together a quick guide to beachcombing on the Oregon Coast near Seaside. Beachcombing Oregon | Things to Do on the Coast Being on the Coast comes with many nuances that inlanders may not be familiar with. Between the turbulent waters of the ocean and the storms that accompany them, there are many items, trinkets, and keepsakes that end up on our seemingly endless shores. Despite the vast assortment of objects and artifacts you will find while beachcombing in Oregon, it is slightly more involved than simply walking down the shoreline. You will want to investigate both the shoreline and the water, so having some waterproof sandals with traction will help. Bring a few containers if you wish to collect your findings and an extra bag just for any trash you find along the way. There are also many creatures you will encounter like starfish, crabs, and turtles that should be left where you spot them but make for great beach photo-ops! Collectible Items Found While Beachcombing in Oregon Mother Nature has a peculiar way of giving, and the Oregon Coast has an abundance of natural and human-made treasures alike. The best times for beachcombing are in the early morning, after a storm, or during a low or receding tide. You can find sand dollars within elongated, sloped beaches during low tide, but you will face fierce competition from gulls watching overhead. The Coast may be best known for its ample driftwood supply but resist the temptation of grabbing a large log as it does not take much water to turn it into a dangerous obstacle. Agates and fossils are some of the most coveted geological treasures and come in many different colors and shapes. After a storm, sticks, and grass commingle, creating a seafaring tumbleweed known as a “whale burp,” despite having nothing to do with whales. Oregon Coast Beach Vacation Rentals in Seaside & Gearhert Now that you have a better understanding of what to expect while beachcombing in Oregon, it is time to find the perfect basecamp for your treasure hunting adventures. With an alluring selection of Oregon Coast vacation rentals in Seaside and other prominent beach communities, Meredith Lodging has you covered. For more information or to book your stay, please reach out to us online or call 877-778-9055 today!

Meredith Lodging’s Top Tips for World Class Whale Watching in Depoe Bay! Did you know that the Oregon Coast is considered one of the best places to whale watch in the world?!? When these magnificent mammals make their annual migration and return, Depoe Bay is one of the best places in the world to visit if you want to see them. You can go out with one of the charter groups for your chance to get up close and personal with these powerful beings, or simply rent an oceanfront Depoe Bay vacation rental and watch for whale spouts from the comfort of your vacation home. We have assembled our top tips for planning a whale of a vacation (see what we did there?) and everything you need to know when you stay with Meredith Lodging for your Depoe Bay Whale Watching vacation. 1) Timing is everything. The Oregon Coast is a great bet for seeing whales many times during the year, but there are some times that are better than others. Plan your trip from mid-March to the end of May and you will be treated to the sight of gray whales migrating back to Alaska from Mexico, hugging the coastline as they go. Keep your eyes peeled for Mama whales and their calves, who often prefer to swim closer to shore. From May to the end of the summer, resident whales (ones who call the Oregon Coast home for months at a time) stay close to the shore for feeding. After the Summer months, your best bet is to plan a vacation sometime between December and early February, as the whales will begin to head down to the warmer waters off Mexico. During this time, they tend to stay farther offshore, so a charter trip will really boost your chances of a memorable sighting. 2) Pick your perfect home base and book a stay in Depoe Bay. A stay in a Meredith Lodging Depoe Bay vacation rental will put you close to all the action. From spotting whales from the shore, to being in close proximity to the Whale Watching Center and all the charters, a Depoe Bay stay is a must. 4) Make friends with the pros. A visit to the The Depoe Bay Whale Watching Center is a wonderful place to expand your knowledge about these impressive mammals (you might even spot whales from their location!) – and it is also on the National Register of Historic Places. Find this facility on the seawall in Depoe Bay. Park staff is at the ready to answer any questions you may have. 5) Choose your charter. If you really want to make sure you have your best chance to see a whale up close, booking a whale watch charter is the way to go. You and your loved ones will never forget watching a 40-ton whale breach up and out of the water! Here are some whale charter companies we recommend: Whale Research Eco-excursions. For a fun and educational experience, we recommend signing up for a tour with Whale Research Eco-excursions in Depoe Bay, OR. These excursions are led by expert marine biologists on zodiac boats, which are rated #1 in safety and extremely comfortable. You can look forward to seeing giant whales, sea lions, seals, seabirds, and more! Tradewind Charters Whale Watching and Fishing This charter has been in business since 1938. A premier charter service that provides fun and interactive whale watching adventures for all. Tours are led by warm and knowledgeable staff members aboard a modern, fully equipped vessel. This company is known for making participants feel like one of the crew. Whale’s Tail Charters LLC Whale’s Tail is also a great bet. Offering everything from scenic tours to custom whale watching trips in Depoe Bay, guests will love the experience of riding in a comfortable zodiac boat while an experienced guide navigates toward known whale viewing areas. Dockside Charters, Inc Is another one that offers a range of ocean adventures, including deep-sea fishing and whale watching excursions. Guests board their 50-foot Delta charter boats (with heated cabins, restrooms, indoor seating!) featuring plenty of outdoor seating. This charter service can also accommodate large group sizes, so a great bet when the whole family wants to participate. Warm-up before and after with local favorite coffee and hot chocolate from Left Coast Coffee Roasters. Some of the best coffee on the coast is right in Depoe Bay. Left Coast has a Depoe Bay café located across the street from a great seawall viewing point. We like to start all our mornings with a stop at Left Coast! Need help planning your Oregon Coast whale-watching getaway? Meredith Lodging’s knowledgeable Reservations Team can help you find and book the perfect stay. Let’s Go “Neskowinning”! What to Do in Neskowin Oregon. Looking for things to do in Neskowin, Oregon? Well, you’ve come to the right place! Neskowin is considered by many to be one of the best-kept secrets on the Oregon Coast. One of the oldest beach towns in the state, the local post office in Neskowin was established in 1886. The name Neskowin is of Native American origin and thought to mean “plenty of fish.” Tucked in along a picturesque stretch the Oregon coast between Nestucca Bay to the North and Cascade Head to the South, this three-mile beach and charming beach town community feels as if it is from another time in the best possible way! When you book a getaway in a Neskowin vacation rental you will be planning a trip that will have the best of both worlds… the slower pace of another time with all the conveniences of today. Fall in love with Neskowin from the moment you check-in to your Neskowin vacation rental and know that these local favorites will be right outside your door. Slow down as soon as you arrive It’s the law! The speed limit in Neskowin, Oregon is officially 15mph in town and we would say most people walk everywhere and those who drive stay under the speed limit at 5-10 mph. All over town you will see charming, hand-painted signs reminding visitors to “Go Slow” and enjoy themselves. Neskowin Trading Company Start your day with coffee, fresh baked goods and gourmet groceries at Neskowin Trading Company – and be prepared for it to become your favorite new vacation habit! Do not miss some of our favorite vendors – including Gingifer’s Kitchen for jam, Nestucca Bay Creamery for cheese and flowers and produce from Corvus Landing Farm. Proposal Rock and the Neskowin Ghost Forest Neskowin has some famous geological formations too! The easiest to see and enjoy is Proposal Rock, which is the signature landmark of the main stretch of beach. And if you wait for the lowest tides of the year, you may be treated to seeing the Ghost Forest of Neskowin, believed to be a Sitka Spruce forest more than 2000 years old that was buried by a tsunami or earthquake thousands of years ago and preserved. Now a few times a year, when the tide is low or after a storm, the remaining stumps can be seen for a few hours or days – a big draw for photographers, geology buffs and beachgoers alike! Visit the Nestucca Bay National Wildlife Refuge At the Nestucca Bay National Wildlife Refuge, visitors can unwind from the challenges of day-to-day existence and find solace in nature. People can take in mesmerizing panoramas of the Pacific Ocean while also enjoying excellent hiking and birding opportunities. This refuge is vital for maintaining healthy populations of waterfowl, deer, bears, songbirds, amphibians salmon, and trout by safeguarding their habitats. Dinner and a Scoop Neskowin is also home to a beloved restaurant and scoop shop that draws in locals and visitors alike. Dinner at the picturesque (and delicious!) Café at Hawk Creek is not to be missed – especially the avocado rolls, halibut bites, fish tacos and Dungeness crab Caesar salad! After dinner (or any time of day) stop by The Village Scoop for a scoop of ice cream or a cone…and they even have pup-friendly ice cream for the doggos in your life! Shevlin Park Shevlin Park is a beautiful spot to discover Bend’s fall foliage, offering more than 652 acres available to explore and see all your favorite fall colors. The Park is easy to navigate, with nearly 10 miles of mostly flat walking paths and trails for running or for hiking that the whole family, leashed pups included, can enjoy.
