Called Rainbow Trout when they stay in the river, Steelhead are the ocean-going trout that tastes like salmon, on its return to the river is was born in. Oregon rivers are home to wild and hatchery steelhead, and there’s active steelhead fishing most of the year.Fun Fact: Steelhead do not die after spawning and can spawn in their natal streams 3 or 4 times.   Winter and Summer Steelhead Fishing on the Oregon Coast Oregon Coast rivers can be host to “summer” or “winter” steelhead runs, or both! Both winter and summer run fish spawn in the spring, but each enter the river at different times and at different stages of reproductive maturity. Winter steelhead are typically larger than the summer run and come in two peak periods; November/December and a larger surge February/March.Summer steelhead fishing starts as early as March, peaks in June/July and can run through November. Steelhead fishing on the Oregon Coast in the shoulder months provides some ‘off peak season’ accommodation opportunities.   Bucket-List-Worthy Steelhead Fishing Every Angler Should Try Oregon’s native steelhead have migrated up the multitude of coastal rivers for generation after generation. The remaining fish are fierce fighters that won’t come in easy though; a 10 – 15 pound steelhead catch is not unheard of. Unlike other popular coastal towns in Oregon, Depoe Bay isn’t centered around strollable, sandy beaches, but around a giant bay and the world’s smallest navigable harbor. You may not be able to put your toes in the sand, but you can whale watch, view a historical landmark and a natural phenomenon, enjoy delicious seafood, and stroll the sea wall.    Check out some of our favorite things to do in Depoe Bay:  Spouting Horn Depoe Bay is the only town on the Oregon coast with a “spouting horn” located downtown. When the tidal conditions are right, waves make their way through the cracks in the lava beds, build pressure, and create geyser-like sprays as high as 60 feet into the air. During stormy weather, Depoe Bay’s spouting horn is known to spray across HWY 101, drenching cars and visitors alike!  Note: Please use caution when viewing these dramatic and impressive forces of nature.  Depoe Bay Bridge This historical landmark is an iconic marker and a favorite stop for visitors and locals alike. The northern end of the bridge includes the Whale Watching Center. Did you know Cannon Beach was just named the sixth best beach in the United Stated by Tripadvisor … and with good reason!  This charming village by the sea offers endless outdoor pursuits, breathtaking views, great shopping and restaurants, and fun annual events.  Check out a few of our favorite things to do in Cannon Beach, Cannon Beach History Cannon Beach, Oregon is a coastal city that is renowned for its breathtaking scenery and is home to Haystack Rock, a popular tourist attraction. Prior to European contact, the Tillamook people inhabited the region. In 1805, William Clark, of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, explored the area and traded with the Tillamook for whale blubber. The area was initially called Elk Creek but was renamed Cannon Beach in 1922 after a cannon from the US Navy schooner Shark washed ashore. The tsunami generated by the Good Friday earthquake in 1964 washed away the highway bridge, leading to the city’s isolation from the highway. In response, the city began hosting a sand castle contest annually in June, which still continues today. Explore the Stunning Beaches & Parks of Cannon Beach The Beach & Haystack Rock Nearly four miles of sandy beach stretch out from downtown Cannon Beach with iconic Haystack Rock rising 235 feet from the edge of the shoreline. Observe tidepools teeming with sea life, and keep your eye out for the colony of tufted puffins that call the rock home during spring and summer.  Ecola State Park This visually stunning park offers miles of walking paths, hiking trails, picnic areas, access to Indian Beach and Crescent Beach, views of the historic Tillamook Rock Lighthouse, and look out points for birdwatching and whale watching. You may even see a herd of elk grazing in the meadows!  Hug Point State Recreation Site Three miles south of Cannon Beach, a visit to Hug Point offers easy beach access and a glimpse into local history. Before the highway was built, the only way to travel along this stretch of the coast was by beach. Imagine traveling by stagecoach on the beach? At low tides, enjoy exploring sea caves, a small waterfall, and remnants of the old cliff-side roadway. Hood is better known for skiing and alpine lakes, but when the warmer months approach, the snow begins to melt, and trails appear leading hikers to some beautiful falls.  Check out some of these scenic waterfalls on your next visit to Mt. Hood:  Tamanawas Falls This moderate 3.4-mile out-and-back trail on the east side of Mt. Hood will lead you along the banks of Cold Spring Creek, through a massive boulder field, finally arriving at the picturesque Tamanawas Falls. The falls are over 100ft tall and 40ft wide, and cascade over a basalt lava cliff. The best time to visit this trail is between May through October. Leashed dogs are welcome.  Umbrella Falls Located on the eastern flank of Mt. Hood near Government Camp, this popular family-friendly 3.4-mile loop weaves you through towering trees and a lush canopy overhead. From the viewing platform, marvel at the majestic 59-foot falls, named for their unique shape. Another waterfall, Sahalie Falls standing at 78ft, can be viewed by continuing along this trail. Leashed dogs are welcome.  Ramona Falls This moderate 7.1-mile loop is known for striking scenery – mountain views, lush green forests, sandy river beaches, classic Northwest flora and fauna, and a stunning 120-foot waterfall. The best time to visit is between May and October. Leashed dogs are welcome.   Little Zigzag Falls The Little Zigzag trail is an easy, family-friendly 0.6-mile out-and-back trail that meanders along a beautiful stream to a scenic waterfall, tumbling in two splashing drops for a total of 41 feet. Surfing in Manzanita Short Sands has become one of the Oregon Coast’s most popular surfing destinations. The beach is one of the safest and most scenic places to surf along the coast, providing beginner and experienced surfers with great wind protection, and clean waves. Short Sands is also surrounded by beautiful hikes, and tide pools to explore, so there is plenty of fun to be had for any non-surfers in your group!  How to Get There Short Sands is located just off the side of HWY 101 north of Manzanita. To get there, pull off into the Oswald West parking lot on the ocean side of the freeway. From the lot, enjoy an easy ½ mile out and back paved trail down to the beach.   Please note: Parking is free and there are restrooms available in the lot. We recommend not leaving valuables in your car.
