Oregon Crab, Anyone? Some locals may say that a trip to the Oregon Coast is not complete without going crabbing! Easy, fun and oh so rewarding (fresh crab!), come see why crabbing is a favorite coastal pastime. When to Go Crabbing Crabbing is legal and open year-round on the Oregon Coast, but September through December is the best time to go. Crabs prefer calmer water as there is less of a current to fight against during high or low tides, so the ideal time of day is at peak high or low tide. Check local tide tables for conditions. Catch Dungeness Crab Using Pots or Rings The most popular way to crab on the Oregon Coast is with a crab ring or pot right off a dock or pier. Crab rings are collapsible baskets attached to a long line, whereas crab pots are similar to cages with an entrance that lets crabs in, but not out. Bait the pots or rings, tie them off the dock, toss into the water, and let soak for 15 to 30 minutes. When the time is up, pull up the pot or ring, and check if you caught anything. Tip – If using a ring, it is important to pull it up quickly, so the crabs can’t escape. You can purchase rings or pods from local tackle shops or sporting-goods stores, or rent equipment from various local marinas. Many offer crabbing packages that include baited rings, buckets, gloves, and a measuring gauge. Looking for a Little More Guidance? Stop by Kelly’s Brighton Marina where you can rent a boat and head out into Nehalem Bay, or toss a trap right off their dock. The friendly crew will even show you how to clean and cook your catch of the day, so you can enjoy fresh crab from their scenic marina picnic area. If you are planning on having a crab feast back at your cozy vacation rental, store your crabs in a cooler or a bucket filled with water or ice. When ready to eat, boil the crabs in a large pot of salted water for 18-20 minutes, then remove the gills and viscera. Serve with some melted butter, and enjoy! Read the Rules and Regulations for Catching Crab Oregon requires a shellfish license for harvesting crabs, clams, or other shellfish. Most fishing and crabbing businesses will also sell licenses. Once you have the license, it’s good for one year. Most of your crabbing on the Oregon Coast will be for Dungeness crab – the largest and tastiest! The daily limit is 12 males that are at least 5 ¾” inches across the crab’s back. You can tell difference by flipping the crab over and looking at its abdomen. Males have a narrow, triangular abdomen flap while females have a wide, rounded one. Be careful to pick up crabs from the back of their shell to avoid being pinched! The second most popular crab on the coast are Red Rock crabs. They look similar to Dungeness, but they have dark red shells, and the tips of their claws are black. Crabbers can keep up to 24 red rock crabs per day, no matter the sex or size. There are numerous spots to go crabbing on the Oregon Coast. A few popular locations are: Necanicum: Dungeness Nehalem Bay: Dungeness Tillamook: Dungeness, Red Rock Netarts Bay: Dungeness, Red Rock Nestucca Bay: Dungeness Siletz Bay: Dungeness Yaquina Bay: Dungeness, Red Rock Alsea Bay: Dungeness Coos Bay: Dungeness, Red Rock Stay with Us on the Oregon Coast or on the Bay Looking to book your perfect home base to explore all the fun to be had on the Oregon Coast? Breweries like Bill’s Tavern, Public Coast Brewing Co and Pelican Brewing have their vats on display and tasting flights on the menus and servers are happy to walk you through the choices. These are all excellent ways to learn about the subtleties that make these small batches special and appreciate your alcohol in a whole new way.Coffee and tea are also craft creations in Cannon Beach; we even have a specialty Chocolate Café! 5. Explore More of the Oregon Coast Food Scene The dining scene in Cannon Beach is already famous so you’ll appreciate choices from coastal classics to the latest award-winning cuisine. For your special honeymoon getaway, take the experience up a notch and book a Dinner Show at EVOO Cannon Beach, where the instruction, wine pairing and technique are presented in the chef’s display kitchen for small groups. This winter, come to Cannon Beach and experience all the amazing wonder it has to offer! Watch storms roll in from the comfort of your beach house, spot some whales while on a coastal hike, or look for elk grazing in the distance. Don’t forget to explore forest hikes and mushroom hunting on the other side of town! You’re sure to find hidden treasures everywhere you go. Here is a list of things to do in Cannon Beach in the winter, some of which you can do all year round, but are better in the winter months. #1 – Storm Watching Experiencing the stormy Pacific Ocean is an awe-inspiring event that will make you appreciate nature’s power. If you have a vacation home overlooking the coast, it’s even better because you can watch the storm from the comfort of your own home. But if you want to get out in the weather, Ecola State Park provides panoramic views like no other. Be sure to pack a raincoat! You can test the winds along the beach or dance in the rain–we’ll have flashlights for you in all our homes for any periodic power outages. Embrace adventure during your stay! #2 – Whale Watching What if the weather improves during your planned storm trip? There’s no need to worry; simply change it up for some whale viewing! On their way to and from Mexico, grey whales migrate past our coast. You’re likely to spot them, or orcas, between December and March. For the best spout viewing, go to the higher viewpoint points. However, no matter where you are (granted you can see the Pacific Ocean), you might see a whale or two – so keep your eyes open! #3 – Beachcombing Check out these amazing spots for agate hunting: Arcadia Beach, Tolovana Beach, Hug Point, Cove Beach, and Short Sand beach. You’re bound to find some beautiful pieces of beach glass too. The best time to look is from December to March after storms; the erosion washes the stones towards the ocean where they get polished over time. If you’re seeking for sand dollars, the best sources are along the northern end of the beach, according to locals. Arcadia Beach, which is located just south of town, is another excellent area to find a lot of sand dollars. If you’re prepared, collecting your shells and cleaning them is a snap. Rinse them in a little amount of water to help remove the funk. To fully eliminate the stench, soak them in a 1:10 bleach solution after the sand has mostly been removed. #4 – Go Elk Scouting in Ecola State Park Keep your eyes peeled for Roosevelt elk while in Ecola State Park. These majestic creatures are often seen grazing near the beach in the winter months. If you’re lucky, you might even spot a bull with a large rack of antlers! If you want to increase your chances of seeing an elk, go on a hike during dawn or dusk. These are the times when they’re most active. Be sure to keep your distance, though, as elk can be aggressive if they feel threatened. #5 – Explore the Oregon Coast! Cannon Beach is just one of many beautiful towns on the Oregon Coast. During your stay, be sure to explore some of the other nearby towns, such as Seaside, Manzanita, and Rockaway Beach. Each town has its own unique charm that you’re sure to love! #6 – Enjoy the Holidays! The festive season begins in November and December with Haystack Holidays, Mimosa Madness, the downtown Lamp Lighting Ceremony, photos with Santa, Holiday Foods Around the World, and more. There’s no wrong way to spend your winter vacation in Cannon Beach. Whether you’re looking for adventure or simply want to relax, you’ll find it here. So what are you waiting for? Start planning your trip today! Make sure to check out our collection of Cannon Beach vacation rentals to make the most of your stay.

Pack & Dress Appropriately Pack or Wear Boots Remember to bring appropriate clothing and shoes for your trip along the Oregon Coast! While tennis shoes may be fine on some trails, hiking boots are always preferable. Beach Gear When on the beach trails above, make sure to remember a couple things: sunscreen & water! The sun can be quite strong on the Oregon Coast, so make sure to put sunscreen on all exposed skin. Drink plenty of water, even if you don’t feel thirsty, to avoid dehydration and heat exhaustion. In the winter, bring extra clothes in case you get wet. Bring a Camera You’ll want to capture the incredible views from these hikes, so make sure to bring your camera or phone! Oregon Coast’s Biggest Secret is September, October, & November! Did you know three of the best-kept secrets on the Oregon Coast are September, October, and November? Both locals and visitors know that fall is one of the most beautiful and desirable times to visit the coast. Golden yellow, blood orange, and burgundy hues provide pops of color against Oregon’s signature old-growth evergreens, temperatures are often mild and sunny – and there is the occasional coastal storm that gives you the perfect excuse to spend hours cozied up by the fire at your Meredith Lodging vacation rental. It is easy to create memories this time of year, too – rain or shine. From whale watching to wine tasting to marveling at the fall foliage on one of the Coast’s many hikes or celebrating Halloween the coastal way, you will find plenty to discover during the autumn months. Looking to plan a memorable fall getaway? We have put together a list of some of our favorite fall activities on the Oregon Coast: Hit the Trails Hiking along the Oregon Coast any time of the year will reward you with stunning views, but with fewer crowds on the trails, fall is a perfect time to get out and explore. Check out 15 iconic hikes here. Wine Tasting The Oregon wine scene is not just located in and around the Willamette Valley. The location and temperate climate of the Oregon Coast provides perfect conditions for many varietals. Stop by some of our favorite wineries to sip, savor and see why Oregon winemakers are making their mark on the wine world. Nehalem Bay Winery Founded in the historic Mohler Creamery building in 1974, this small, family-owned winery offers a wide selection of fruit wines, as well as traditional red and white grape varietals. Stop in for a taste, and soak in the history of one of the oldest wineries in the State of Oregon and the first winery on the Oregon Coast. The Winery at Manzanita Let the afternoon hours slip by at this kid and dog-friendly winery. The wines are produced in small batches here – focusing on quality over quantity. They serve flights, so you can sample all the styles, as well as local craft beer and cider. You can also order DIY smores kit to toast over the fire pits. Order a glass of wine and a charcuterie platter, settle in on an Adirondack chair, and take in the ocean views. Find out more things to do in Manzanita from our Area Guide. Visit Yaquina Head Lighthouse A trip down Highway 101 is not complete without stopping to view some of its historic lighthouses. Anytime of the year is great to visit these iconic beacons, but a trip in the fall can offer dramatic coastal skies, whale spotting, and less crowds. One of our favorite stops is the Yaquina Head Lighthouse. Standing 93 feet tall, this lighthouse has been guiding ships and their cargo along the west coast since it was first lit in 1873. Visitors can enjoy a visit to the interpretive center which features exhibits on seabirds and local marine life, as well as history about the Yaquina headland. There are also tide pools to explore and scenic trails to discover, making for an easy outing the whole family will enjoy. Savor Seasonal Treats at Local Farmers Markets Come see what is in harvest! Local vendors will be offering a wide variety of seasonal produce, cheeses, flowers, artisan foods, crafts, and more! Support local communities as you enjoy fresh and fine food, shopping, and live entertainment. We encourage you to check opening times and dates as events are subject to change. Whale Watching Fall is a great time for whale watching, as the resident population of 200+ gray whales cruise the Oregon coast from June to mid-November, often less than one mile from shore! Some of the top places to spot the spouts of these majestic mammals are Cape Meares Lighthouse, Cape Kiwanda, and Neahkahnie Mountain Viewpoint. A wide array of creatures reside where Cannon Beach’s rocky shorelines touch the Pacific Ocean. As the tide ebbs, a novel and vibrant environment is exposed in intertidal and rocky areas. Look closely and you’ll find anemones that resemble flowers blooming at the bottom of pools, or colorful sea slugs called nudibranchs crawling on rocks. Among these captivating and interesting sights are also crabs, fish, snails, limpets, sponges, and a variety of different types of sea stars. Cannon Beach is rich with tide pools, making it a great destination for seeing the amazing creatures that call these unique habitats home. It’s a MUST for any Cannon Beach vacation! What is a Tidepool? How Do You Find Tide Pools? A tidepool is a shallow pool of seawater that forms on the rocky shoreline as the tide goes out. As the tide ebbs, pools of varying sizes and depths are left behind. Some tidepools are only a few inches deep while others can be several feet deep. To find tidepools, look for areas where there are rocks jutting out into the water. These areas are more likely to have tidepools as the waves will not be able to wash away all of the water. When exploring tidepools, it is important to be respectful of the creatures that live there. Remember to never remove anything from the tidepool as it could damage the delicate ecosystem. Also, be careful not to step on any of the creatures, or damage the plants. Looking at a pool or gently sweeping away seaweed might reveal tiny ocean wildlife that would otherwise be missed. When looking for locations to find tidepools, be cautious of your surroundings at all times and never turn your back on the ocean. During the day, the sun warms these tidepools and the water within them evaporates. This creates a unique environment for the creatures that live there as they must be able to withstand fluctuations in temperature and salinity. At night, when the tide comes back in, these creatures are once again submerged in cold ocean water. When Is the Best Time To Explore? The best time to explore the tidepools is during a low tide, when the water recedes and exposes a larger area of rocks and pools. Check the tide chart before you go so you know when to expect the low tide. It’s also a good idea to wear shoes with good traction, so you don’t slip on the wet rocks. Where Can I Find Tidepools Near Cannon Beach? Near Haystack Rock Haystack Rock is located just north of Cannon Beach and is a popular destination for tourists and locals alike. The tidepools found there are home to a wide variety of creatures, including anemones, crabs, sea stars, and urchins. Ecola Point / Ecola State Park Ecola State Park is another good option for exploring tidepools. It’s not as popular as Haystack Rock, but it’s just as interesting. This state park is located just north of Cannon Beach and features a number of different trails with stunning views of the coastline. The tidepools here are home to a variety of creatures, including crabs, anemones, and urchins. Indian Beach Discover rarely visited tidepools at the southern end of this less-populated boulder-strewn area by taking a side road down to Indian Beach. Lake Lytle is a great destination for swimmers, boaters, and fishermen alike. The lake is situated in Rockaway Beach, Oregon, and offers a change of scenery for visiting the coastal area. The lake is also a great place to take the family for a picnic, or just to relax by the water. There are plenty of activities to keep everyone entertained, and the scenery is simply beautiful. If you’re looking for a place to enjoy the outdoors and spend some quality time with loved ones, Lake Lytle is the perfect spot. Here are a couple of things to note before you make the trip! New to Kayaking or Paddle-Boarding? Lake Lytle is Ideal for Beginners The gentle surface of this lake makes it ideal for beginner kayakers and paddleboarders. It is not directly fed by an ocean stream, as are other lakes in the region, and is only ruffled by boats and the wind. Don’t Forget the Insect Repellent! Although the water is calm, the insects can be quite pesky. Be sure to pack some insect repellent before you head to the lake, as you’ll definitely want to enjoy the outdoors without being bothered by bugs. Lake Lytle is Great for Swimming and Boating The lake is perfect for swimming and boating, and there are plenty of areas to relax on the shore. The water is warm and crystal clear, making it ideal for a refreshing dip. There are also several boat rental companies in the area, so you can explore the lake at your leisure. Visitors should note that Lake Lytle is directly off Highway 101, and the only parking is along the shoulder highway. Motorized boats are allowed, so if you wish to avoid boats, jump over to nearby Crescent Lake, which is smaller and shallower, and has a motor boat ban. Fishing Lake Lytle At Lake Lytle, you’ll find a variety of fish, including white bass, perch, bullhead catfish, crappie, steelhead trout, rainbow trout, smallmouth bass, striped bass and brook trout. Your chances of getting a bite here are excellent whether you’re baitcasting, spinning or fly fishing. So grab your favorite fly fishing tackle and head to Lake Lytle. There are two distinct times of year Lake Lytle is known for: trout fishing in the spring and bass fishing in the summer months. Trout Fishing in Spring The best time to fish for trout in Lake Lytle is in the spring, when the hatchery has released rainbow trout into Lake Lytle. You can do well from the shore or from a boat, with spinners or bait – in the spring it probably doesn’t matter. Children will enjoy reeling one in after another. The best lures to use are small spinners, spoons, and flies. For bait, try using nightcrawlers, power bait, or minnows. If you’re fishing from a boat, trolling with spinners or spoons is usually the most successful method. If you’re fishing from the shore, try casting your line near likely trout hiding spots, such as undercut banks, log jams, and weed beds. Bass Fishing in the Summer The best time to fish for bass in Lake Lytle is in the summer months when the water has warmed up. The most successful method is to fish early in the morning or late in the evening, when the sun is not as intense. The best lures to use are plastic worms, spinner baits, and top-water lures. For live bait, try using nightcrawlers, minnows, or crayfish. As with trout fishing, the best spots to fish for bass are near undercut banks, log jams, and weed beds. You can also find bass near docks and submerged brush piles. TIP: Remember to get your Oregon fishing license before you go! You can purchase one online or at any sporting goods store. Ready to Visit Rockaway Beach and Lake Lytle? Book a Vacation Rental with Meredith Lodging! Whether you are planning a getaway to the coast or the high desert, there is beauty in abundance throughout the scenic state of Oregon. Oregon caves are abound all over the state! Enjoy the adventure of discovering the unique beauty of Oregon while exploring these caves: Sea Lion Caves The first on our list of Oregon caves is the Sea Lion Caves in Florence. Kids of all ages will love seeing the Sea Lions lounge about along the shoreline! The Sea Lion Caves is America’s largest sea cave as well as a privately owned wildlife preserve and bird sanctuary. During the winter, visitors can see hundreds of sea lions in the cave, and in the spring and summer months, the sea lions can be seen napping, and basking in the sun on the rocky ledges outside of the cave. The caves are open to the public 363 days of the year, from 9am to 5pm (weather permitting). Reservations are not required to go on their self-guided tour, and tickets can be purchased in the gift shop. Prices: Adults – $16.00 each Seniors – $15.00 each Children 5 to 12 – $10.00 each Children 4 and under – free Explore the Skylight Cave The next on our list of Oregon caves is the Skylight Cave. The Skylight Cave in Sisters is a fun and easy cave adventure the whole family can enjoy! According to forest officials, the cave is actually a lava tube that formed during the eruption of neighboring Sixmile Butte. When the lava cooled, thin portions of the ceiling fell, producing three natural skylights. The cave is only open from May to September to protect the endangered bat population that hibernates inside. In order to see the beams in their full glory, it is recommended to visit in the morning between 8:00 am – 11 am. If you go later, you can still catch one or two beams, but the position of the sun doesn’t allow the light to fully shine through each of the three skylight holes after 11 am. Do keep in mind that on overcast days, the beams will not be visible, so try to plan your visit on a day with clear skies for direct sunlight. To enter the cave, visitors will descend down a small, sturdy metal ladder. If you head left, you will find the skylights after about 300 feet. If you turn right, there is about 900 feet of cave to explore, but ultimately it dead ends. The cave temperature is 40 degrees in the summer, so warm clothing is recommended. Wear good walking or hiking shoes, as the trail surface can be uneven and slippery. Bring a light source, and make sure to thoroughly clean off your shoes if you’re going to other caves on the same day. White-nose syndrome – a fungus that’s potentially spread by humans carrying it in from other caves, can be fatal to bats. Devil’s Punchbowl Next up on our list of Oregon caves is the Devil’s Punchbowl. Once a sea cave, the pounding persistent waves of the mighty Pacific Ocean caused the roof to collapse, forming one of Oregon’s most well-known, natural attractions. Situated between Newport and Depoe Bay, the location is easy to reach from Highway 101. Turn onto Otter Crest Loop, and follow the sign for the punch bowl. There is a large parking lot, which also includes a public bathroom. The Devils Punchbowl Trail is one of the best ways to reach the rock formation and is a short and easy 0.8-mile out and back route. This upper trail will take you from the parking lot to the viewing area where you can marvel at this natural phenomenon. You can also venture directly into the punchbowl at low tide, but conditions can change quickly, and we recommend taking extreme precautions. Boyd Cave Boyd Cave is the next cave on our list of Oregon caves. It is a roughly 1,880-foot-long lava tube cave estimated to have been formed about 10,000 years ago. It’s located about 12 miles from Bend, and is one of the largest and best-preserved caves in the region boasting dynamic basalt and pahoehoe formation. Bring a flashlight and wear layers, as temperatures drop dramatically inside the cave. Arnold Ice Cave If you’re feeling brave and ready to explore, take a trip just 12 miles southeast of Bend to the extraordinary Arnold Ice Cave. You’ll find yourself deep in Central Oregon’s wilderness off China Hat Road surrounded by sagebrush, juniper trees, and ponderosa pines guarding an incredible volcanic underworld that was crafted about 80 thousand years ago thanks to a basalt lava flow. The awe-inspiring caverns nestled within the northern summit of Newberry Volcano are known to harbor ancient Native American artifacts that have been dated all the way back to 1370 A.D. Once referred to as “Crook County Ice Caves,” Ronald Greeley, an explorer for Oregon’s Department of Geology and Mineral Industries, christened them with their current moniker following extensive examination of these lava tubes’ remarkable features. Mirroring the nearby and well-traveled Lava River Cave (5,466 feet long), these lava tubes were formed when the top layer of a molten flow came into contact with air. As this outer crust cooled down from temperatures as high as 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit to solidify, hotter liquid lava underneath continued steadily flowing like a river beneath it. When all the magma eventually drained away through time what remained was an empty tube in place. Oregon Caves National Monument Our last cave on our list of Oregon caves is the Oregon Caves National Monument. Come discover and explore a labyrinth of marble passageways deep within the Siskiyou Mountains with a ranger guide. The tour lasts 90 minutes and is limited to 12 people. Currently tours are available 10:00 am to 4:00 pm, Thursday through Monday until Sunday, November 6, 2022 Same day tickets: First come, first served tickets are available at park visitor centers. Most historians agree that Thor’s Well began as a sea cave that over time has been dug out by the impressive force of the sea to create a sinkhole just outside of Yachats. This “hole in the rock” is a spectacular way to witness the power of the ocean as the waves roll into the 20-foot-deep cave, and then come roaring back out of the top of the cave. High tide and stormy weather are the most popular times to visit. We recommend taking in this mesmerizing site from the viewpoints if the ocean appears too rough on the day of your visit.
