Seeing orcas off the Oregon Coast is a rare treat; however, sightings have gone up in recent years as the population of transient orcas has increased thanks to conservation efforts that are helping restore populations of prey animals – like sea lions, seals, and gray whales. In fact, last Monday, May 8th, whale watchers along the coast spotted a pod of orcas hunting prey together in an organized group in the waters between Cape Foulweather and Gull Rock. Interesting fact – Commonly called ‘killer whales,’ orcas are actually the largest member of the dolphin family. What are transient orcas? Transient orcas are a different subspecies from the famous resident orcas located around the San Juan islands in Washington. Transient orcas stay in smaller pods generally made up of less than 10 orcas and eat primarily marine mammals. How to spot an orca Orcas are most often spotted in the waters near Depoe Bay and Newport. The first thing you are likely to see is their dorsal fin. Male orcas have a dorsal fin that can be up to six feet in height, while females and juveniles have shorter fins. Newport offers several high vantage points ideal for orca and whale watching – the lighthouse at Yaquina Bay, the Yaquina Head area, and Cape Foulweather. The Whale Watching Center in Depoe Bay is another great place to spot orcas. Prefer to get up close and personal? There are several great whale charter companies in Depoe Bay to choose from. Their experienced and friendly crew will make sure you have a memorable excursion! Book Your Next Coastal Getaway with Us! Swing by the local surf shops to pick up some wax and score some insider tips. What’s the best time of year to learn to surf? Surfing the Oregon Coast is a year-round sport, but late May to mid-September is the ideal time to learn, because the waves are smaller and more manageable, and the NW winds are blowing. Not your first time on a board, but maybe your first time in Oregon waters? Fall boasts ideal conditions with less wind, warmer waters, and consistent surf. Winters are awesome too, if you can brave heavy rainfall and chilly ocean temperatures. We recommend wearing a thick wetsuit, booties, gloves, and a hood as well as checking out the daily and weekly surf forecast before heading to the beach. Where do I surf? Your knowledgeable instructors will choose the lesson location based on tidal and wind conditions anywhere from Astoria to Manzanita. However, lessons are often held on Short Sands Beach within Oswald West State Park, or near “The Cove” on the south end of Seaside Beach. Insider tip: Longboarders head to “The Cove” at high tide for hollow, clean, and fun waves. Hungry Post Surf? We recommend grabbing a pizza from Angelina’s Pizzeria & Cafe or A&B Pizza to enjoy back at your cozy Meredith Lodging vacation rental after a well-deserved surf session. Surf and Stay with Us! Unlike other popular coastal towns in Oregon, Depoe Bay isn’t centered around strollable, sandy beaches, but around a giant bay and the world’s smallest navigable harbor. You may not be able to put your toes in the sand, but you can whale watch, view a historical landmark and a natural phenomenon, enjoy delicious seafood, and stroll the sea wall. Check out some of our favorite things to do in Depoe Bay: Spouting Horn Depoe Bay is the only town on the Oregon coast with a “spouting horn” located downtown. When the tidal conditions are right, waves make their way through the cracks in the lava beds, build pressure, and create geyser-like sprays as high as 60 feet into the air. During stormy weather, Depoe Bay’s spouting horn is known to spray across HWY 101, drenching cars and visitors alike! Note: Please use caution when viewing these dramatic and impressive forces of nature. Depoe Bay Bridge This historical landmark is an iconic marker and a favorite stop for visitors and locals alike. The northern end of the bridge includes the Whale Watching Center. Just beneath the center is a whale watching platform with picnic benches and coin-operated telescopes – perfect for searching for a spout offshore. Prefer to get up close and personal? Tradewinds Charter has been providing whale watching charters since 1938. Their experienced and friendly crew will make sure you have a whale of a time! Note: Depoe Bay is known as the Whale Watching Capital of the Oregon Coast. Spring Oregon Whale Watch Week takes place March 22 – March 30, 2025. Shop and Dine with a View Depoe Bay’s huge sea wall runs the length of the downtown area, providing visitors with an ocean view while shopping and sampling the local cuisine. Celebrating a special occasion? We recommend Restaurant Beck. Craving seafood? Tidal Raves has a great menu serving classics dishes with a twist like Dungeness crab mac and cheese and fish tacos served with chimichurri rice, chipotle aioli and cilantro lime sour cream. Did you know Cannon Beach was just named the sixth best beach in the United Stated by Tripadvisor … and with good reason! This charming village by the sea offers endless outdoor pursuits, breathtaking views, great shopping and restaurants, and fun annual events. Check out a few of our favorite things to do in Cannon Beach, Cannon Beach History Cannon Beach, Oregon is a coastal city that is renowned for its breathtaking scenery and is home to Haystack Rock, a popular tourist attraction. Prior to European contact, the Tillamook people inhabited the region. In 1805, William Clark, of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, explored the area and traded with the Tillamook for whale blubber. The area was initially called Elk Creek but was renamed Cannon Beach in 1922 after a cannon from the US Navy schooner Shark washed ashore. The tsunami generated by the Good Friday earthquake in 1964 washed away the highway bridge, leading to the city’s isolation from the highway. In response, the city began hosting a sand castle contest annually in June, which still continues today. Explore the Stunning Beaches & Parks of Cannon Beach The Beach & Haystack Rock Nearly four miles of sandy beach stretch out from downtown Cannon Beach with iconic Haystack Rock rising 235 feet from the edge of the shoreline. Ecola State Park This visually stunning park offers miles of walking paths, hiking trails, picnic areas, access to Indian Beach and Crescent Beach, views of the historic Tillamook Rock Lighthouse, and look out points for birdwatching and whale watching. You may even see a herd of elk grazing in the meadows! Hug Point State Recreation Site Three miles south of Cannon Beach, a visit to Hug Point offers easy beach access and a glimpse into local history. Before the highway was built, the only way to travel along this stretch of the coast was by beach. Imagine traveling by stagecoach on the beach? At low tides, enjoy exploring sea caves, a small waterfall, and remnants of the old cliff-side roadway. Tide and sand conditions can change suddenly, so please explore safely. Seaside Oregon – The Beach Is Less Than 2 Hours From Portland The historic town of Seaside Oregon is at the end of the Oregon Trail, and today is a short drive from the Portland metro area. An easy and comfortable place to relax and reconnect with nature, Seaside has something to offer everyone’s interest and abilities. Winter In Seaside Oregon Is Outdoorsy Too If you think the beach is just for summer, you are missing out on half the fun! Winter on the Oregon Coast is both exciting and cozy, with a fraction of the crowds that make summer so crowded. Outdoor experiences include beachcombing, clamming and crabbing, and wildlife watching. Seaside Has a Secret! (not too secret) This is a GREAT place to collect sand dollars! No one is sure exactly why, but Seaside Oregon is home to thousands of sand dollars, who leave behind their distinct skeletons when they depart. It’s a bit of a walk, but heading to the secluded beaches just south or north of the mouth of the Necanicum River means you’ll have the best choice of sea souvenirs. You’ll recognize the ones that are OK to collect because they are bleached out grey or white. Sand dollars that are purplish or fuzzy looking are still alive! Please leave them to finish their lives in the wild. Clamming and Crabbing for Your Supper Chances are, you’ve never been clamming or crabbing, Oregon-style. You really should give it a try! Foraging for your food is easy on the north Oregon Coast. Our local beaches account for 95% of Oregon’s razor clam harvest; the densest razor clam population in the state is in Seaside. Digging them is a fun activity for all ages in most weather and is a popular Oregon coast activity. Crabbing in the Necanicum estuary is open year ‘round. The 12th Ave bridge is a popular spot to stop and chat with other fisherfolk for ideas, inspiration or tall tales if you can’t participate. Make sure you get the right fishing permit, short stay ones are available, and find the gear for your foraging dreams. You can get these at Trucke’s 1-Stop or Rite Aid in Seaside or Bud’s Campground & Grocery in Gearhart. Wandering Wildlife of the North Coast The Roosevelt elk that live on Oregon’s north coast have discovered good summer eating in the gardens of our coastal towns but they head for the foothills in the late fall. For winter wildlife viewing, take a side trip from your Seaside stay to visit the Jewell Meadows Wildlife Area in the scenic Coast Range. This winter feeding station offers excellent viewing of up to 200 elk. Elk feeding tours are offered from December through February (reservations required, 503-755-2264) but you can see them in the area November – April. There’s an amazing array of wildlife living in the area if you miss the elk – Bald Eagles, Red Tailed Hawks, Owls, Coyotes, Bobcats, Weasels, River otters, Beaver, Stellar’s Jay and their forest friends. The site is ADA accessible, and has a picnic area and restrooms. Some parking areas require a permit; ask the ranger. Winter in Seaside has plenty of adventure to offer; try it out in the un-summer! Whale Watching: No Depoe Bay Boats Oregon’s Whale Watching Week returns in person this winter! Trained volunteers meet at 17 designated Whale Watching sites along the coast to help you spot the spouts, tails and flukes of the migrating gray whales from December 28 – Jan 1. (10 a.m. to 1 p.m daily). Look for the Whale Watching Spoken Here signs along the high promontories along the north coast where Oregon State Parks volunteers can guide your viewing. The north coast headlands let you view farther out to sea than a Depoe Bay boat. Mild Average Temps Make Getting Outside Fun DYK? The Oregon Coast’s temperatures are surprisingly mild in winter, with average highs in the 50s and average lows above freezing. The trick to a comfortable visit to Seaside in winter is layers; wear layers and add and subtract throughout the day. A rain layer is practical and recommended but sweatshirts and jackets are enough for most folks. Our Beach Vacation Rentals Make Travel So Comfortable!
