Top Hikes in Central Oregon in 2025 Spring and summer continue to be the prime seasons for hiking in Central Oregon, making 2025 an ideal year to plan those long-anticipated bucket-list trails, especially iconic routes like the South Sister summit hike. With alpine lakes, lava fields, waterfalls, and Cascade peaks, Central Oregon offers an incredible range of hikes for beginners, families, and experienced trekkers alike. Staying close to the trailheads makes all the difference. Meredith Lodging vacation rentals in Bend, Sunriver, Sisters, and Mt. Bachelor Village place you near many of the region’s most popular hikes while giving you a comfortable place to unwind after full days on the trail. Cozy living spaces, private decks, and easy access to town amenities make these homes a smart basecamp for your hiking getaway. Central Cascades Wilderness Permits (2025 Update) Many of the most popular hikes in Central Oregon require a Central Cascades Wilderness Day Use Permit. These permits help manage trail traffic and protect fragile wilderness areas. Day-use permits are required per person, per day, and apply to specific trailheads. Permits are released seasonally in advance and remain limited, with high-demand trails often selling out quickly—especially on weekends and during peak summer months. Advance planning is strongly recommended for 2025 trips, particularly if South Sister, Green Lakes, or other Cascade favorites are on your list. All permit reservations and up-to-date rules are managed through Recreation.gov, where you’ll also find trailhead-specific details and seasonal access information. Start Planning Your 2025 Central Oregon Hiking Trip From challenging summit climbs to scenic lakeside strolls and family-friendly forest trails, Central Oregon delivers unforgettable hiking experiences year after year. Below, we’ve rounded up some of the best hikes in the region along with helpful tips to make planning your 2025 adventure smooth, safe, and memorable. South Sister (Permit Required) South Sister is the third tallest mountain in Oregon and the tallest of the Three Sisters. This trail is on many a hiker’s bucket list, and it is easy to see why. At just over 12 miles in length with an elevation gain of nearly 5,000 feet, this trek is recommended for experienced hikers only. Best used from June to October, and dogs are allowed to join you in this hike but must be kept on leash. A long, straightforward climb that offers spectacular views from the summit of Middle Sister, North Sister, Three Fingered Jack, and views all the way to Mt. Hood and Mt. Washington on a clear day. To the South of the summit, you will see gorgeous views of Mt Bachelor and Broken Top. A must-do for summit-seekers! Three Sisters Green Lake Trailhead (Permit Required) Alpine lake lovers will love this trail! This hike is located near Sunriver, Oregon and is best used from June to October. It is a 9.1 mile long out and back and has an elevation gain of 1187 ft. Along the way you will be richly rewarded with water views almost the entire length of the trail – including picturesque small waterfalls and gorgeous Green Lake views. Dogs are allowed whenever the trail is open but must be on leash during summer months. Broken Top Trailhead to No Name Lake (Permit Required) This hike is labeled as difficult mostly due to the length of the trail (13.2 miles). There is a shorter loop but be aware it requires a high clearance vehicle and accessing the trailhead requires driving some rough road! On the 13.2-mile route, the elevation gain is gradual, and the only truly difficult part is when you have to scramble up the creek bed for a bit. Please note when the waters are likely to be rougher (late July and August), this can be tricky, so it is recommended to do this hike later in the season (September and October would be better than mid-summer). No matter when you hike, you will be treated to expansive views of emerald-green No Name Lake and the crown of Broken Top. The trail sees moderate to heavy usage and most of the trail does not have tree cover, so remember to bring your hats and sunscreen when you tackle this stunning climb. Tumalo Falls Hike ($5/vehicle, payable onsite) This picturesque loop trail is 6.8 miles long, heavily trafficked, and popular due to its gorgeous waterfall views. The hike is considered moderate and is accessible year-round (though it can get lots of snow and ice in the winter, so please do your research). This route is popular for hiking and bird watching, so bring your binoculars! Dogs are only allowed on the first part of this trail and not inside the watershed. The 97-foot Tumalo Falls waterfall is one of the tallest and most beautiful in Central Oregon and certainly worth the trip! Proxy Falls Loop Trail ($5/vehicle, payable onsite) Looking for a short, family-friendly (think 2-mile loop, 100 ft. elevation gain) hike with breathtaking views? Look no further than the Proxy Falls Loop Trail! Part of the stunning McKenzie Pass wilderness area, Proxy Falls is considered a good hike for all skill levels and best enjoyed from March to November. Dogs are welcome to join you but must be kept on leash. After a day of trail time, you will be ready to rest-up a bit…may we suggest a Meredith Lodging Bend or Sunriver vacation rental with a private hot tub? A soak under a sky full of stars will have you rested and ready to do it all over again the next day. A stay at a Mt. Bachelor Village vacation rental will have the family-friendly Deschutes River Trail right outside your door! View our entire Central Oregon and Mt. Bachelor Village collection at MeredithLodging.com.

3 Ways to Maximize Your Central Oregon Vacation Rental Browsing the internet for vacation rentals in Central Oregon can sometimes be a mixed bag. On the one hand, you’re likely to find many suitable properties that come with desirable amenities. On the other hand, you may find yourself overwhelmed with too many options and disappointed to learn that not all vacation rentals can offer the same advantages. Thankfully, Meredith Lodging has a dazzling assortment of well-appointed accommodations offering seemingly unfettered access to several of Central Oregon’s most treasured natural assets in places like Bend, Sisters, and Sunriver. To give you an idea of what to consider when searching for your home away from home, we’d like to share three tips on how to maximize your Central Oregon vacation rental experience. Book Your Vacation Rental Direct with Meredith Lodging With the advent of Airbnb and other vacation rental juggernauts, it may be tempting to take a shortcut to find that perfect property. However, it’s hard to know what to expect when not working directly with your host. From hidden fees to unreliable amenities, booking with a massive online service can be somewhat of a gamble. When you reserve your vacation rental directly with Meredith Lodging, you’ll get peace of mind by working with local travel experts who know each property inside and out. Always Examine the Amenities and Property Types Not all vacation rentals offer the same amenities, so it’s essential to consider every option. While some places may offer a hot tub, that’s not the case at every property. Furthermore, even though we have many single-family homes, we also provide a collection of condo living spaces. It’s crucial to determine what type of rental will fit your needs to receive the best possible experience. Save Money on Food by Making Your Meals We all know that sampling local cuisine is a cornerstone to a successful vacation, but that doesn’t mean you have to eat out for every meal. A huge advantage to staying at a fully-equipped rental property is the ability to create your breakfasts, lunches, and dinners. The money you save by not constantly dining out will allow you to allocate your budget for recreation and entertainment. Few restaurants can offer the scenic beauty found from the comfort of your vacation rental dining room, patio, or deck. Central Oregon: A Worthy Vacation Destination Whether you’re coming from across the country or live elsewhere in the Beaver State, it doesn’t take long to realize why Central Oregon is an excellent place for an unforgettable getaway. With its towering mountains, sprawling forests, and sparkling waterway, this beloved region has a lot to offer. Known by many as an outdoor enthusiast’s playground, the area surrounding Mount Bachelor presents a myriad of options for those hoping to immerse themselves in nature’s bounty. Still, people who aren’t as enamored with kayaking, hiking, and fishing will undoubtedly find much tranquility amid this beautiful region. No matter your preferences, Meredith Lodging promises to provide extraordinary accommodations.
The Best Beaches for Surfing near Newport, Oregon With its wave-tattered shores, rugged coves, and laid-back communities, the Oregon Coast has all the makings for an excellent surfing destination. At the center of it all, Newport – one of the regional mainstays—offers an ideal basecamp for those hoping to uncover hidden gems amid an iconic backdrop. Not until relatively recently did the Oregon Coast become recognized as a good surfing area. Still, many of those places are crowded and marred with pollution. Thankfully, what Oregon Coast beaches lack in wave size, it generously makes up for by having a peaceful location with reasonably clean waters. And as the area’s premier vacation rental provider, Meredith Lodging invites you to make yourself at home as you explore some of the best beaches for surfing near Newport, Oregon. Newport Oregon Surfing: Where to Start If you’ve never had a chance to hit the ocean waves, many avid surfers will tell you to take some lessons before gearing up. Ossies Surf Shop in Newport is not only your destination for learning the ins and outs of carving bombs; you’ll also find apparel, accessories, rentals, and gear. Another place you may want to check out is South Beach Surf Shop, where you’ll find new and used boards, lessons, and threads. Finally, Oregon Surf Adventures in Seaside has offered two-day surf camps for kids aged seven to seventeen and instructing youngsters since 2005. Oregon Coast Surfing for Beginners near Newport The area around Newport is teeming with superb beaches for beginners to get their feet wet. In South Beach State Park, the aptly named South Beach lies about a mile south of Newport and offers miles of wind-eroded beach break. A bit north, Agate Beach provides a relatively consistent surf that is feasible all year round. And further north, Otter Rock is a beginner-friendly hot spot where many locals come to get their first taste of salty swells. Intermediate and Expert Oregon Coast Surfing near Newport The winter months on the Oregon Coast make the area a proving ground for many intermediate and expert surfers. Roads End State Beach north of Lincoln City will feature several beach break peaks, which is arguably the region’s most advanced surfing opportunity, but be ready to paddle! Likewise, the Florence South Jetty is another place where avid shredders pay their dues by ripping through massive swells and natural hazards. Oregon Coast Vacation Rentals in Newport and Beyond Surfing around Newport, Oregon, is something every outdoor and ocean enthusiast should consider. We may not have massive waves, but our welcoming communities offer a nice reprieve from more populated surf destinations. Ideally located within many of these coastal towns and villages, Meredith Lodging has an eclectic array of vacation rentals in places like Newport, Lincoln City, Cannon Beach, and beyond. 5 Tips to Help You Find the Perfect Oregon Vacation Rental Oregon is an excellent choice for discerning vacationers with its diverse outdoor recreation scene and unique attractions. Whether you’re traveling solo, with a family, on a romantic getaway, or a friend’s retreat, there seems to be something for everyone in the Beaver State. Do a quick Google search for “Things to Do in Oregon,” and you may find yourself overwhelmed with options. Thankfully, Meredith Lodging boasts an eclectic collection of Oregon vacation rentals on both the coast and the mountains, giving you a myriad of options to create an unforgettable escape from life’s hustle and bustle. Now, finding the perfect rental option can look simple on the surface, but there are many things to consider. To help you wade through a plethora of decisions, we put together five suggestions to find the perfect basecamp to explore Oregon. Find an Oregon Vacation Rental to Match Your Activities While searching around for things to do in Oregon, you can sometimes lose sight of why you want to visit in the first place. With that in mind, it’s crucial to find somewhere that satisfies your needs. For example, if you wish to indulge in some retail therapy, you’ll probably want a vacation rental near Bend, where you’ll find several well-known retailers. Or, if you’re going to try surfing, beachcombing, or ocean fishing, you’ll want to post up somewhere like Newport, Lincoln City, or Cannon Beach. Determine Your Preferred Time of the Year Part of what makes Oregon such a popular vacation destination is the seemingly endless array of recreational and entertainment options. And although we’re known as a premier outdoor enthusiast’s playground, there are still plenty of things to do besides skiing, hiking, fishing, and kayaking. You could go shopping in Bend, drink fine wines in Manzanita, or eat your way through Newport. Deciding which season you would enjoy most will make choosing your vacation rental that much easier. Make a Realistic Budget For the majority of travelers, setting a budget is necessary no matter their vacation’s length. Still, it doesn’t take much to become enthralled with all the possibilities. As such, you’ll want to figure out how much money you can spend as soon as possible. Many vacationers will erroneously consider only their lodging costs while forgetting about food and other daily necessities. On the other hand, some people may only focus on entertainment while not considering the price of a well-appointed place to stay. The biggest takeaway is finding symmetry between a worthy vacation rental while refining your recreational choices. No one wants to spend their vacation worrying about money. Set Defined Vacation Goals Understandably, most of us would rather not fret over goal setting while on vacation. But having clear expectations on how you can spend your time will go a long way in preventing disappointment or unnecessary budgetary constraints. Setting goals early will keep you motivated to try new things while making it easier to choose a vacation rental that fits your desired experience. Spend Some Time Researching With so many things to do in Oregon, there are a lot of factors to consider as you find the perfect vacation rental. And let’s be honest, there are plenty of decent options ranging from camping to hotels. Still, you want something that is not only close to your recreational destinations but also offers well-appointed accommodations and amenities to complement a remarkable getaway experience. Considering that vital element, you should do relatively extensive research on the towns and cities that have made the final cut. On the bright side, Meredith Lodging proudly presents several fantastic vacation rentals that promise to satisfy many preferences. To learn more about how Meredith Lodging can accommodate your Oregon getaway, don’t hesitate to reach out online or call 877-778-9055 today!
