Here’s a list of some of our favorite upcoming events and festivals to help you plan a summer to remember.  Ongoing Events Summer 2022  First Friday Artwalk, Downtown Bend Stroll through the streets of downtown Bend on the first Friday of each month to enjoy local art exhibits, live music, food, wine, and more! This festive event takes place from 5-9pm.   Summer Concerts at Hayden Homes Amphitheater, Bend The Hayden Homes Amphitheater (formerly Les Schwab Amphitheater) is an independent, riverfront outdoor Amphitheater in the historic Old Mill District. We guarantee a night to remember as you sing and dance the night away under the stars. Check out their amazing upcoming summer concert series.   Things to Do in Central Oregon in May and June  May 21 – Happy Girls Run Bend – The Happy Girls Race series provides a supportive running environment for all women offering 5k, 10k, and half marathon races. Grab a friend, sister, or co-worker and make some memories as you run through breathtaking scenery, while working on your own individual fitness goals. Enjoy the all-new course for 2022 at Riverbend Park, Bend.  May 27 – June 5 – Venardos Animal Free Circus – This visual spectacle was created by former Ringling Bros. Ringmaster Kevin Venardos, and combines world-class animal-free circus acts with a Broadway Musical-style format. Guests will be transported back in time under the big top of a centuries-old tradition, but one that has been reimagined for the next generation. Deschutes County Fair & Expo Center, Redmond, OR.  June 22-26 – Oregon Trail Gravel Grinder – Embark on the Grand Tour of Gravel with this epic five-day, 350-mile bike race through the heart of the Cascades. Sisters, OR.  Things to Do in Central Oregon in July and August   July 9-10 – Bend Summer Festival, Downtown Bend – Come celebrate summer with live music, hundreds of local and regional artisans, family fun, food vendors, and more!   July 22-24 – Balloons over Bend – Marvel at the site of hot air balloons launching into the skies over Bend at dawn. At night, purchase tickets to attend the Night Glow events in Bend and Redmond, which feature glow-in-the-dark balloons, live music, food, a marketplace, and more!  August 8-21 – Sunriver Music Festival – This annual musical festival is dedicated to expanding the audience for classical music concert series by bringing classical musicians from all around the US to present a world-class musical experience. Classical performances are held in the Tower Theatre in Bend and the Sunriver Resort Great Hall.   July 7 –  August 11 – Munch & Music – Drake Park, Downtown Bend – This weekly summer concert series provides the community of Central Oregon with free live music, local vendors down Artisan Row, food and drink, and family fun in the Kids zone. Music begins at 5:30pm and ends around 9pm.   Things to Do in Central Oregon Over Labor Day Weekend  September 2-3 – Little Woody Barrel-Aged Beer, Cider & Whiskey Festival, Downtown Bend – Come sip and savor craft, barrel-aged beer, cider and whiskey from the Northwest’s top breweries. This is a truly thrilling visual display of a natural wonder.   Learn about marine life at the Oregon Coast Aquarium or the Seaside Aquarium  The Oregon Coast Aquarium in Newport is one of the nation’s top aquariums offering a variety of educational programs and displays highlighting marine mammals, fish, and birds primarily native to the coastal area.  And although this is a list for outdoor activities on the Oregon Coast, aquariums are educational so that going outdoors can be better appreciated. The Seaside Aquarium is one of the oldest aquariums on the West Coast. Kids of all ages will enjoy feeding the resident seals, observing the live displays of native marine life, and exploring the hands-on discovery center.  Take a lap at Captain Kid Amusement Park’s go kart track  The whole family can get in on the fun at this Seaside fun center. Rev your engines at the go kart track, play mini golf, ride a rollercoaster, climb a 26-foot rock climbing wall, and experience weightlessness like an astronaut on a GyroXtreme Rotate and Tumble.  Enjoy picturesque views on horseback with Green Acres Beach & Trail Rides  Located in Pacific City, Green Acres Beach & Trail Rides provides experienced horses for riders of all skill levels. Enjoy a one-hour ride that will take you directly onto the beach, into Bob Straub Park, up onto the sand dunes and ends back down at the water’s edge.   Spend a day canoeing, kayaking, or on your SUP at Devils Lake  Lincoln City’s beloved Devils Lake boasts calm waters and protection from coastal winds, making it the perfect spot to take the boat out, or dip a paddle from your kayak, or stand-up paddle board (SUP). The friendly and knowledgeable crew at  Lincoln City Surf Shop and Safari Town Surf Shop can get you outfitted for a fun-filled day out on the water.   Explore, hike, and birdwatch at scenic Nehalem Bay State Park   This picturesque park offers miles of trails, wildlife and bird spotting, and sand dunes for playing and jumping. The majestic Pacific Ocean is to the west of the park, and Nehalem Bay to the east, making this the perfect spot to capture some family photos. Leashed pups are welcome, too!  Fly a kite at Rockaway Beach  Every August, the largest kite flying contest in the Northwest happens at Rockaway Beach. Drop by Flamingo Jim’s Gifts and Clothing, to pick up a kite (and other fun beach-themed souvenirs) and hit the beach for some kite flying fun!  Put out your crab pots in Nehalem Bay  Kelly’s Brighton Marina is the perfect spot to try crabbing. Toss your trap right off their dock or book a guided crab catching adventure out on the bay. The friendly and helpful crew will even show you how to clean and cook your catch of the day!  Try a whale watching charter in Depoe Bay  People from all over the world come to Depoe Bay for a chance to spot a gray whale. During the summer, there are 40-50 resident gray whales that hang out close to the shore to feed. One of the best places to spot these majestic mammals is from the large viewing deck at The Depoe Bay Whale Watching Center. Prefer to get up close and personal? Book a charter with  Tradewinds Charters or Dockside Charters.  Take an ocean view drive on the scenic Otter Crest Loop   Oregon’s rustic and picturesque coastline will take your breath away at every turn. Enjoy stunning views and endless photo ops at Ben Jones Bridge, Devils’ Punchbowl, and Cape Foul Weather.   Hike the dune at Cape Kiwanda in Pacific City  No trip to the Oregon Coast is complete without hiking some sand dunes near Pacific City. A climb to the top of Cape Kiwanda Dune is fun, yet challenging, but your efforts will be rewarded with stunning views. After you have caught your breath, explored, and captured a family picture from the top, it is time to bound or scoot (on your backside) back down the dune!  Explore Haystack Rock in Cannon Beach  This impressive rock formation rises out of the sea, making Haystack Rock one of Oregon’s most recognizable landmarks. The whole family will enjoy playing on the beach, and exploring and searching for shells, sea anemones, and barnacles when the tide is out. Highlights include the live animal exhibits and interacting with living history characters at the Miller Ranch, where you can learn about the lives of the early pioneers.  Although this is not an outdoor activity, per se, it helps kids understand the ecology of Oregon to better appreciate it when they do go out to enjoy it. Discover Tumalo Falls  No visit to Central Oregon is complete without a hike to Tumalo Falls. This 6.8-mile loop is rated moderate and will reward you with stunning views of the thundering falls. Leashed pups can join in on the fun, too!  Hit the Downtown Bend Artisans Market  Enjoy a stroll through this open-air marketplace where you can shop from a variety of stalls, including local artists, farmers, and food vendors.  Join the Last Party of the Season on the Mountain  Mt. Sorella Italian Restaurant When it comes to authentic Italian cuisine, no place can compare to Sorella. Kyllos Seafood & Grill Kyllos Seafood and Grill in Lincoln City, OR features delicious cuisine and oceanfront dining at every table. We love to leave the Portland area early in the morning and make it there by late morning, or leave in the afternoon, so we can see those hills awash in early evening golden light. No matter what time of day, this 3000+ acre geologic site will take your breath away! Part mini-Grand Canyon vibes, part other-worldly and ALL stunning it is easy to see why the Painted Hills are one of the Seven Wonders of Oregon. nps.gov Newberry Volcanic National Monument Central Oregon has a fascinating volcanic past and there is no better to place to appreciate all of it than the Newberry Volcanic National Monument. This recreational area is home to stunning vistas, many hiking trails, waterfalls, swimming lakes and natural hot springs. Looking out across the landscape from the 500 ft elevation point at Lava Butte (a 7000-year-old cinder cone) the views of Mt. Bachelor, Broken Top and the Three sisters will have your jaw dropping…almost as much as the sunset views from Paulina Peak (accessible by car). fs.usda.gov Swim and Lunch at Suttle Lake Lodge If you are headed to Sunriver Via Hwy 20, Suttle Lake is right on your way! Located just outside Sisters, OR, Suttle Lake Recreation Area makes for a picturesque stop on your way to Sunriver. The lake allows both motorized and non-motorized boating and has several spots perfect for a sunny Summer swim. After recreating a bit and working up an appetite, lunch at the Suttle Lake Lodge boat house (dining outside or to-go) is a wonderful place to refill before you continue to Sunriver. fs.usda.gov Where to Stay in Sunriver Maison du Poulet – Caldera You will feel as though you have reserved a private boutique hotel for your vacation when you step inside the door of stunning Maison du Poulet in the Caldera Springs neighborhood. A wonderful way to start off a day of exploring and whale watching in Depoe Bay, just south of Lincoln City proper. Prefer to stay local? The Human Bean provides drive-through coffee prepared by friendly and experienced baristas. Start your day with your choice of espresso, specialty coffees like a chocolate macadamia nut breve or a salted caramel latte, Steven Smith Teamaker teas, and smoothies. Get Breakfast from The Wildflower Grill The Wildflower Grill – In the mood for a leisurely breakfast in a scenic setting? This charming eatery is set in a cozy converted cottage with outdoor seating and garden views. Serving American classics with a twist, you will have a tough time choosing between the Crab Benedict, a seafood omelet stuffed with fresh crab and shrimp, or French Toast dipped in cinnamon, eggs, and orange juice. All breads and baked items are baked fresh daily. The Grill also serves an outstanding lunch menu. Blackfish Café Blackfish Café – Serving simple, yet elegant lunch and dinner dishes featuring fresh seafood, local produce and seasonal vegetables that highlight the flavors of the Pacific Northwest. WE think they have one of the best salmon Caesar salads on the Oregon coast, and a nice wine list, too. Barnacle Bill’s Seafood Market A trip to Lincoln City is not complete without a stop at Barnacle Bill’s Seafood Market for their famous smoked salmon. This locally owned and family-run fish market serves seafood delicacies like shrimp and crab cocktail, salmon jerky, oysters, and manila clams. They also sell smoked salmon and tuna (when in season) in vacuumed sealed in pouches to go and a wide variety of gift boxes – perfect for the seafood lovers on your holiday gift list! Kyllo’s Seafood & Grill Dine with an ocean view at local and visitor’s favorite Kyllo’s Seafood & Grill. Serving up some of the freshest seafood, steaks, pasta and burgers alongside handcrafted cocktails and an extensive wine list. Make sure and leave some room for their decadent house made mocha “mudd” pie! Side Door Café Side Door Café is a family-run restaurant serving thoughtfully sourced New American dishes in an airy and unique space. This café proudly offers locally trolled fish, grass-fed beef, and farm fresh organic produce. Make sure to ask your server about the daily lunch, dinner, and desert specials. Reservations are encouraged. Sip and Shop at Black Squid Beer House. This local bottle shop and tap room has 17 taps featuring some of the best craft beer, cider, mead, wine and kombucha on the Oregon Coast. They do not serve food, but the good news is, you can bring whatever snacks or take-out you’d like to create your own happy hour! Pups are also allowed on the enclosed patio. 21 and over please. Also home to the world’s smallest harbor, this charming beach town is the best place to spot massive whales migrating close to the shore. Depoe Bay whale watching takes place year-round and is a popular activity for both locals and visitors alike. If you are planning a trip to the Oregon Coast, you must experience it for yourself! Here are a few things to keep in mind before you go. If you are planning to go whale watching in Depoe Bay, you’ll need to find the perfect accommodations for your stay. Whether you are visiting in the spring, summer, fall, or winter, you can spot whales along the Oregon Coast year-round. But you definitely won’t miss the 2025 Spring Whale Watch Week. Summer and Fall is another great time for whale watching, as you are likely to spot our resident gray whales feeding close to shore! Visit the Depoe Bay Whale Watching Center Recognized on the National Register of Historic Places, the Whale Watching Center is the perfect place to spot gray whales. The facility is located right on the seawall in Depoe Bay and park staff is readily available to answer any questions you may have. The Center’s hours vary throughout the year, and it is typically closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. Depoe Bay Whale Watching Excursions If you would like to see the whales up-close, we definitely recommend signing up for a whale watching tour. There are several charters in Depoe Bay that will take you out to sea, where you may spot large spots, whalebacks, deep dives, and even breaches. There’s nothing quite as impressive as watching a 40-ton whale leaping out of the water! Here are some of our favorite charter companies: 1. Whale Research Eco-excursions: For a fun and educational experience, we recommend signing up for a tour with Whale Research Eco-excursions, LLC in Depoe Bay, OR. These guided trips are led by expert marine biologists on zodiac boats, which are rated #1 in safety and extremely comfortable. During the tour, you can expect to see giant whales, sea lions, seals, seabirds, and more! Regular one and a half hour excursions cost $45 and are just $35 for children 12 and under. Daily departures are scheduled at 10 a.m., 12 p.m., and 2 p.m. Make sure to arrive early and don’t forget to bring your camera! 2. Tradewind Charters: Tradewind Charters Whale Watching and Fishing in Depoe Bay, OR, is another one of our favorite tour companies. This premier charter service has been providing fun and interactive whale watching excursions since 1938! Tours are led by a friendly and knowledgeable staff on modern, fully-equipped vessels. You may come aboard as a visitor, but we guarantee that you will leave feeling like you are a part of the crew. One-hour whale watching cruises are just $20 for adults, while two-hour cruises are $35. 3. Whale’s Tail Charters LLC: Whales Tail Charters also offers a more personalized experience. They offer everything from whale watching and scenic tours to custom trips. Guests can enjoy riding in a comfortable zodiac boat while an experienced guide takes you right up to all the best whale viewing areas. One-hour tours are $30, or you may enjoy a one and a half hour tour for $40. They can accommodate smaller group sizes between 2 and 6 people. 4. Dockside Charters, Inc: From deep sea fishing to whale watching excursions, Dockside Charters offers a wide array of ocean adventures. Settled in the Pacific Northwest, Bend (Oregon) is a year-round outdoor playground with the Deschutes river in town. Its epic Cascade Range to the West, tons of hiking trails, and lakes make the city an excellent place for recreational activities.  Tumalo fall is one of the most iconic waterfalls in Central Oregon. At nearly 100 feet in Deschutes National Park, Tumalo Falls boasts several stunning viewpoints, accessible hiking trails, other cascading waterfalls, and beautiful forests to wander through. The first glimpse of this picture-perfect waterfall will take your breath away.  During summertime, you can simply drive up to Tumalo Falls and then walk to a couple of overlooks. However, in the winter, they close the roads. So, you must park outside and walk 2.5 miles to the Falls. Before heading out for the trip, let’s look at everything you need to know about the trails. Let’s get started! Tumalo Creek Falls: In-and-out & Loop Trails A few miles away from the trailhead in Deschutes National Forest, Tumalo Creek runs from Skyliner snow park to Tumalo Fall. While we’re all for in-and-out hikes, there’s something special about a loop hike. It just feels a little more adventurous. You will return to where you started a different way, never retracing a step, every view of a fresh one. The Tumalo Falls Loop hike is a very rewarding average-length day height that you can do in the high desert of Central Oregon. You’ll travel a total of seven miles and climb about 1300 feet. You’ll have to start at about 5000 feet elevation at the trailhead. So, this can be a good height to escape the valley’s heat for a bit on a hot summer day.  How to get to Tumalo Falls Trail To get to the trailhead for this hike, head West out of the Old Town part of Bend on Skyliners Road. After about 9 miles, shortly after the historic Skyliners neighborhood, the road beers right and turns into Tumalo Falls Rd. Then it’s a gravel road for a couple of miles until you dead end at the trailhead. Equipment to Consider Bringing: Let’s go over just a few things you might want to consider bringing for this hike, in addition to whatever you usually gear up with.  trekking poleswater shoessun hatNorthwest Forest Pass (for parking). We recommend getting this ahead of time. If you don’t have a chance, bring a $5 bill. Tumalo Creek Falls hiking trails So you made it to the trailhead; now what? Well, you can jump right into the hike, but right at the trailhead, you’ll find an excellent viewpoint for the main Tumalo falls as well as a trail you can take down to Tumalo Creek and follow up to the bottom of Tumalo falls if you want to do a little exploring first.  When you’re ready to get going, head off to the left of the interpretive signs up the North Fork Trail. You’ll soon approach a fork in the trail you can take to the right to get that view from the top of the falls. The trail branches off in various places in this area, but it all joins together again if you just keep going forward uphill.  This first section of the trail takes you to an upper viewpoint of Tumalo falls, then continues up along Tumalo Creek. The first short section to the upper viewpoint is the steepest part of this trail, but the trail itself is flat gravel. Once you continue past that upper viewpoint, it is a gentle, gradual accent for this section. But the trail becomes more typical_ rugged, rocky, and rudy kind. When’s the best time of the year to hit this trail Tumalo Creek Trail is a great to visit during the spring, summer, and fall. All intersecting trails As you follow this meandering path along Tumalo Creek, you’ll be greeted by a waterfall after a waterfall. The main Tumalo falls at the trailhead may be the biggest, but all of these smaller gems add up to something more. And they keep coming. Swampy Lakes Trail After a couple of miles, you’ll reach a log bridge going over a Creek. You’ll cross the bridge and meander slowly uphill for another mile, passing more waterfalls, which will now be on your left. After that mile, you’ll come to your first junction with the Swampy Lakes Trail, where we’ll be making a sharp left turn, ending section A of this loop. The next section of this loop continues uphill for a bit but soon transitions to a steady downhill, which will continue the rest of the way. After less than half a mile, you will approach that Big Creek crossing we mentioned earlier. The main crossing is a huge log that you can try balancing across, but it may have water flowing around and over it.  Bridge Creek Trail If you don’t feel like trying that, you can also go downstream where the water is not pooling behind logs and try wading through it, maybe with some added support from trekking poles. Soon after that crossing, you’ll find yourself gliding downhill on a more overgrown and exposed trail than before, with younger trees crowding the trail.  The trail will level out in less than a few miles, and you’ll approach the next section of the loop, starting at a junction with the Bridge Creek Trail. The last section of the loop is a relatively flat trail following along Bridge Creek to connect you back to the North Fork Trail just up from the trailhead.  Keep a lookout on your right for lovely views of Bridge Creek and maybe another small waterfall or two in the distance. You’ll come up on a small building on your right towards the end and veer off to the right, returning to where you started. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) Do you need a permit for Tumalo Falls?
