Ski And Stay in Bend at Mt. Bachelor Village by Meredith Lodging Winter is a wonderful time of year in Central Oregon! The mountain tops are blanketed with snow and the winter sport community awakes each morning with growing excitement– ski season is here at last! When seeking a destination for exhilarating winter recreation, Mt. Bachelor Ski Resort is the place to be. Mt. Bachelor Ski Resort is an excellent destination for snowboarding or alpine-style (downhill) skiing. It rates consistently as the top PNW ski resort. There are two primary points that make this ski resort extra special. One is that Mt. Bachelor is categorized as a volcano (and an active one at that!). The last eruption was about 9,500 years ago, so this should not be a cause for concern. Secondly, when the weather allows, you can ride the Summit chairlift to the top of the mountain and take your pick of 360 degrees of ski route options! For a challenging route, hit the terrain on the back of the mountain (when conditions allow). Chutes and a cat track provide lots of diversity as you make your way down to the Cloudchaser lift to the East or the Northwest lift to the West. Always exercise caution, especially on a challenging route. The backside of the mountain is considered backcountry terrain and should only be navigated by expert-level snowboarders or skiers. This ski resort has 16 different chairlifts and 12 of the lifts have chairs that hold four passengers and run at high speeds. There are also three different lodges available. Two of the lodges are located at the base of Mt. Bachelor and one is situated midway up the mountain (a luxurious addition!). Most of the mountain will fit intermediate and beginner skill levels (in addition to the more challenging options). There is a multitude of meandering groomed trails, outstanding ski runs through the trees, and plenty of great powder. There is something for everyone at every skill level – the whole family is sure to have a blast! And what if alpine skiing is not your preference? There are plenty of fantastic cross-country trails for all skill ranges. Want to enjoy the mountain like a local? Wake up as early as possible to beat the rush! A single-lane road creates quite the traffic jam for those who did not rise before opening time at the mountain. Take your breakfast and coffee to go and enjoy watching the ski operations open for the day. Then, you just might have a few fresh runs all to yourself!

They offer more than 50,000 square feet of fun and activities, including youth and adult soccer, youth flag football, lacrosse, a huge indoor soft play system (called The Big Play Thing) – with more than 7000 square feet of climbing, playing and sliding fun. This facility also offers Central Oregon’s only dedicated indoor Kart Racing Facility. They are the first facility in the US to offer stat-of-the-art zero emission karts imported from Italy. Take your favorite speed-racer to Cascade Indoor Sports! Lava River Cave What better way to escape the rain than by going underground? Visit Central Oregon’s Lava River Cave and you can do just that! Explore a mile-long lava tube with your kiddos – they will think it’s the coolest thing ever – especially the resident bats! The Forest Service reminds cave-goers to dress for the average temps of 42 degrees and avoid wearing any clothing or gear you have worn on prior cave trips to protect the natural habitat. Plan on 1.5 hours to tour the entire cave, with an initial descent of 55 steps. Bend Rock Gym Does your kiddo dream of climbing Monkey Face someday at world-famous Smith Rock? Let them start developing their climbing skills early at Bend Rock Gym. This popular year-round facility offers climbing experiences the whole family can enjoy and has special programming and experiences for kids – and birthday party packages, too. They also offer Yoga classes and massage for parents whose kids have them climbing a wall (see what we did there?!). A great place to get the wiggles out and learn something new! High Desert Museum There is so much to see in this world-class museum it could keep you and your kiddos wide-eyed with wonder for days! Self-described as the place where Wild meets West, The High Desert Museum opened in 1982 and brings together wildlife, history, art and the natural world to demonstrate the wonder and awe-inspiring reality of North America’s High Desert. Visitors will experience award-winning outdoor exhibits, view wildlife in their natural habitats and learn by observing living history demonstrations. Not sure where to start or what to look for when booking a Work From Home (WFH)/Online School getaway? We have assembled our top list of tips to help you get started. Top Tips for Choosing a Work From Home Destination and Preparing for Your Trip Make it easy! Choose a destination that is easily reachable by car. Make it Fun. Choose a location that has lots of activities right outside your door. Accessibility is key to making those school and work breaks (Recess on the beach! Take a bike ride break in Sunriver!) memorable and fun. Location, location, location. Pick a location that places you in the middle of Oregon’s natural beaty, with plenty of fresh air and wide-open spaces right outside your door. Learn on the way AND at your destination. See if there are any sites you can stop and explore safely on the way and make sure to research a little about local historical sites and nature adventures nearby once you arrive. Think about proximity to convenience. Choose a location with a proximity to grocery stores and other conveniences that meet your needs. Hype your destination a little bit before departure. Read up about where you will be going. Let each person choose an activity the whole family can participate in. Having a plan gives everyone something to look forward to! Pack strategically. Remember this is more of a change of scenery than a traditional vacation. You may want to bring more groceries than you usually would to minimize outings, make sure you have the right clothes for the weather forecast. Also consider bringing extra chargers or any other equipment you need to make your WFH/Online school set-up work for you. What to Look for in an Oregon Vacation Rental When Working Remotely/Attending Online School You’ve got bandwidth! Make sure your home has WIFI (99% of Meredith Lodging homes do!) Room to work & Learn. If each person in your party needs to have their own space to work/attend school, be sure to choose a house with enough bedrooms and other workspaces to accommodate that. Many homes have desks in the bedrooms, and you can utilize dining room tables and other tables for workspace, too. A well-equipped kitchen. You will be making lots of meals at home during these times, make sure you have a kitchen and eating area that meets your needs. Traveling with your pod? Make sure each household has dedicated bedrooms and (ideally) a dedicated bathroom for each household and that they are used only by those they are assigned to. Look for homes with outdoor space/outdoor covered spaces you can enjoy. Gathering outside is safe and fun! Look for decks/yards with firepits to keep you cozy – and outdoor hot tubs are always a hit! Book a home with a view! Choose a home with a relaxing view of the ocean, the mountains, the woods, the river, or the golf course – having inspiring views right outside your door makes you relax and feel like you are on vacation, even when you are working. And the short commute to happy hour is enhanced by a beautiful view, too! Look for homes with space for kiddos to play! Many of our homes have pool tables, ping pong tables, foosball – and lots of bikes for family fun. Booking a home with these kinds of spaces puts smiles on those sweet faces! Arriving at Crater Lake in the Summer months and you will find hiking trails along the shoreline, abundant natural beauty and many scenic views of Wizard Island and Phantom Ship, formed more than 7700 years ago when a violent volcanic eruption collapsed an ancient volcano, creating Crater Lake. It is always fun to tick a National Park off your list, and we suggest a stop at Crater Lake Lodge dining room, Annie Creek Restaurant, or the Rim Village Cafe before you head for home to Bend or Sunriver. From Bend to Crater Lake is a scenic 2-hour drive. Newberry National Volcanic Monument / Newberry Caldera A lot closer to your Meredith Lodging Bend or Sunriver vacation rental is a day trip to Newberry Caldera. This national monument was created in 1990 and included more than 54,000 acres of lakes, lava flows, and stunning geologic sites. Paulina Peak is the highest point within the monument at (7,985 ft, and a steep/fast vertical climb if you are hiking), and offers beautiful vistas of the Cascades, the High Desert and Newberry Caldera. The Newberry Caldera stretches more than 17 miles across the 1200 square mile volcano that is still both seismically and geothermically active today, offering visitors memorable views of cinder cones and vents (more than 400), rhyolite flows of obsidian and basalt flows. Our favorite activities include the hike from the edge of Paulina Lake to the rustic Paulina Springs hot springs and a stop at The Big Obsidian Flow, featuring more than 170 million cubic yards of rugged pumice and glass-like obsidian. The Newberry Caldera is a quick 18-minute drive from Bend and only 12 minutes from Sunriver. The opportunities for adventure are endless when you stay with Meredith Lodging in Central Oregon. Meredith Lodging’s Central Oregon Headquarters Office is located in Bend, Oregon and our local employees love living in Bend because of all the adventure just outside their door. Many of Bend’s most-loved sites get pretty crowded in the Spring and Summer months, but there are a few places that are remain on our “best-kept-secrets list and we want to share those with our Meredith Lodging family. These are some of our favorite places and we hope they will be yours, too! No Name Lake No Name Lake is a local favorite and as soon as you see the blue-green jade-colored water and its picturesque surroundings you will understand why. The trail to the lake is an easy one and the elevation gain is gradual. It is long, though, and has a short scramble at the end up the creek bed, which accounts for its more difficult category, but other than those two factors, the trek is easy to moderate. Most parts of this hike do not have tree cover, so you will want to pack your hats and sunscreen – and mosquito repellant if going in the summer months. The wildflowers are beautiful in July! Tenas Lakes This 4.9-mile out and back is moderately busy most of the time. The lake is loved by locals and the trail to get there is appropriate for all skill levels. Bird watchers, this hike is for you as its also considered a good birding location. Dogs are allowed on leash. This trip is best taken from June to November. Hidden Forest and Arnold Ice Cave Nothing cooler than an ice cave! See what we did there…This hike is close to Bend and is a 0.8 mile out and back that is a good bet for all skill levels. You will be rewarded with views of beautiful wild flowers and lots of good bird sightings as well as the chance to explore some cool Oregon caves. Please note the road to access the trail is bumpy. East Lake Hot Springs This adventure is within the Newberry Crater recreational area, and is a local favorite because it is less crowded than nearby Paulina Lake Hot Springs. The trail to East Lake Hot Springs is a 3.4 mile moderately trafficked out and back trail located near La Pine, Oregon. Once you reach your destination you will be rewarded with beautiful lake views and incredibly hot springs (100-120 degrees!) and their classic sulfur smell. Locals love to dig their own pools and combine spring water and lake water to get to the perfect temperature. The trail is best used for hiking, walking, nature trips, from May until October. Dogs are allowed. After a day full of adventures, return to your perfect home-base – your Meredith Lodging Bend or Sunriver vacation rental.
