Ski And Stay in Bend at Mt. Bachelor Village by Meredith Lodging Winter is a wonderful time of year in Central Oregon! The mountain tops are blanketed with snow and the winter sport community awakes each morning with growing excitement– ski season is here at last! When seeking a destination for exhilarating winter recreation, Mt. Bachelor Ski Resort is the place to be. Mt. Bachelor Ski Resort is an excellent destination for snowboarding or alpine-style (downhill) skiing. It rates consistently as the top PNW ski resort. There are two primary points that make this ski resort extra special. One is that Mt. Bachelor is categorized as a volcano (and an active one at that!). The last eruption was about 9,500 years ago, so this should not be a cause for concern. Secondly, when the weather allows, you can ride the Summit chairlift to the top of the mountain and take your pick of 360 degrees of ski route options! For a challenging route, hit the terrain on the back of the mountain (when conditions allow). Chutes and a cat track provide lots of diversity as you make your way down to the Cloudchaser lift to the East or the Northwest lift to the West. Always exercise caution, especially on a challenging route. The backside of the mountain is considered backcountry terrain and should only be navigated by expert-level snowboarders or skiers. This ski resort has 16 different chairlifts and 12 of the lifts have chairs that hold four passengers and run at high speeds. There are also three different lodges available. Two of the lodges are located at the base of Mt. Bachelor and one is situated midway up the mountain (a luxurious addition!). Most of the mountain will fit intermediate and beginner skill levels (in addition to the more challenging options). There is a multitude of meandering groomed trails, outstanding ski runs through the trees, and plenty of great powder. There is something for everyone at every skill level – the whole family is sure to have a blast! And what if alpine skiing is not your preference? There are plenty of fantastic cross-country trails for all skill ranges. Want to enjoy the mountain like a local? Wake up as early as possible to beat the rush! A single-lane road creates quite the traffic jam for those who did not rise before opening time at the mountain. Take your breakfast and coffee to go and enjoy watching the ski operations open for the day. Then, you just might have a few fresh runs all to yourself!

They offer more than 50,000 square feet of fun and activities, including youth and adult soccer, youth flag football, lacrosse, a huge indoor soft play system (called The Big Play Thing) – with more than 7000 square feet of climbing, playing and sliding fun. This facility also offers Central Oregon’s only dedicated indoor Kart Racing Facility. They are the first facility in the US to offer stat-of-the-art zero emission karts imported from Italy. Take your favorite speed-racer to Cascade Indoor Sports! Lava River Cave What better way to escape the rain than by going underground? Visit Central Oregon’s Lava River Cave and you can do just that! Explore a mile-long lava tube with your kiddos – they will think it’s the coolest thing ever – especially the resident bats! The Forest Service reminds cave-goers to dress for the average temps of 42 degrees and avoid wearing any clothing or gear you have worn on prior cave trips to protect the natural habitat. Plan on 1.5 hours to tour the entire cave, with an initial descent of 55 steps. Bend Rock Gym Does your kiddo dream of climbing Monkey Face someday at world-famous Smith Rock? Let them start developing their climbing skills early at Bend Rock Gym. This popular year-round facility offers climbing experiences the whole family can enjoy and has special programming and experiences for kids – and birthday party packages, too. They also offer Yoga classes and massage for parents whose kids have them climbing a wall (see what we did there?!). A great place to get the wiggles out and learn something new! High Desert Museum There is so much to see in this world-class museum it could keep you and your kiddos wide-eyed with wonder for days! Self-described as the place where Wild meets West, The High Desert Museum opened in 1982 and brings together wildlife, history, art and the natural world to demonstrate the wonder and awe-inspiring reality of North America’s High Desert. Imagine this … Checking in to a cozy cabin in the mountains or getting away to a perfect oceanfront abode for your next Thanksgiving … sounds dreamy, right? You and your guests will love the cooler weather (perfect for getting cozy by the fire!) and seeing your holiday celebration (and each other!) in a new light because you are celebrating in a new place. There are so many benefits to planning your Thanksgiving or other holiday getaway by booking a beautiful, private, and professionally cleaned Meredith Lodging Oregon Coast or Central Oregon vacation rental. Ready to plan your perfect holiday getaway? Your best bet is to book early while the selection of homes is still great! We’ve put together our best tips for taking your Thanksgiving celebration on the road with Meredith Lodging this year: (1) Choose Your Perfect Home Away from Home. Are you planning to cook up a feast? Make sure you love the kitchen in the home you choose! Also, think about what says “vacation” to you … a fireplace, a beautiful view, a cozy nook for reading a book … or a spa-like bathtub? We can help you find a home that has all the features and amenities you are looking for. And if your favorite “dish” to make for Thanksgiving is reservations, we can help you make sure to book a home that is close to the many award-winning and delicious dining options in Central Oregon and along the Oregon Coast. (2) Room to Celebrate – and to Re-charge. Many families and friends return each year to celebrate the holidays on the Oregon Coast or in Central Oregon. Two things they tell us they always look for are great gathering spaces to bring everyone together and plenty of well-appointed bedrooms, bathrooms, and other spaces for everyone to comfortably retreat to, so they can rest and re-charge as well. Book a home that offers features and amenities like a large dining space inside and out, plenty of seating around the fire, and comfy bedrooms and baths for everyone in your group. (3) Bring the “Taste of Home” with You! Plan to make some cherished family recipes while you enjoy your getaway. Staying at the coast? Consider adding some seafood-inspired touches to your feast! Giving thanks in Central Oregon? Pack up some apres-ski, snow, and cold goodies to enjoy and warm-up with your loved ones. We are sharing a few of our team’s favorite recipes below: Best Hot Chocolate Ever Recipe by Bon Apetit. We think the title says it all. Cheers! We think the title says it all. Cheers! Oregon Home Magazine’s Publisher Courtney Kutzman made this amazing Smoked Crab Dip, when she and her family stayed with us in South Beach. It has become a favorite for many! Please note the recipe is at the end of the article and is worth the read! Our favorite seafood stop is always Barnacle Bill’s in Lincoln City – and while this might not technically qualify as a recipe (because they make it for you), it’s just not Thanksgiving for us unless Barnacle Bill’s smoked salmon dip is on the table! A couple of staff members in our Bend office recommended this recipe for scalloped potatoes and wow – it’s a game changer! Takes a little bit of time to make but is always a hit with the whole table. Creamy Herbed Potatoes by the Pioneer Woman. Looking for a no-fail turkey recipe?!? A member of our leadership team swears by the Williams Sonoma “Willie-Bird” pre-brined turkey and after trying it, we have to say – we agree! It is a bit of a splurge, and a delicious one, too! Want to serve a dessert that is both new and deliciously familiar?!? Our social media lead loves to make this Upside Down Pumpkin Pecan Pie with Caramel Sauce. She has been bringing it to her celebrations for 10 years at the strong request of her guests! (4) Get Moving on the “Big Day.” Take advantage of the fact that you are celebrating in the mountains or at the beach and plan a Thanksgiving morning outing to get everyone some exercise before all that eating. A family bike ride, a hike, a walk along the beach – all will fill your lungs with fresh air and your hearts with happy memories before you fill your bellies with tasty food. (5) Most importantly – Share the Gratitude! Many of our guests find that celebrating Thanksgiving in a new, beautiful place makes them even more grateful than usual for the blessings in their life. We are BIG fans of a round-robin session at the dinner table, giving everyone a chance to say what they are grateful for. One family’s take on it is particularly great for a holiday getaway – they ask each person at the table to say something “old” that they are grateful for as well as a new, recent reason they are feeling the love, related to the vacation. This gets everyone in a happy mood before you dig into all that food. Plan an extra-Happy Thanksgiving with Meredith Lodging this year. We look for home details like a dining room table with chairs for everyone, outdoor spaces with plenty of seating, and cozy indoor gathering spaces, too (especially around the fire of for family movie night!). Make sure your home offers plenty of room for your group to come together and make memories. Rooms with a view. Consider booking a home that offers a gorgeous Oregon Coast or Central Oregon view! Being able to relax to the sounds and sights of the waves on the beach or watch the sun set and the light change against the mountain range just takes that vacation feeling up a notch. A beautiful view also brings everyone together at sunset…and you won’t even have to ask them to put their screens or phones down! Dreamy kitchens. For many of us, cooking on vacation is a delight. Sourcing local, fresh ingredients, having the time to cook and enjoy the process and creating memorable meals for the ones you love is a “happy place” for many guests. Booking a home with a chef’s kitchen makes life feel a little more magazine-worthy and that’s fun, too! Look for chef-inspired details like high-end appliances, and fun extras like recently updated or remodeled kitchens, plenty of surface space, wine refrigerators, double ovens, or island space for your sous chef to keep you company. Luxurious touches. Everyone loves to feel pampered on vacation, especially during the holidays. We love luxury touches like extra-comfy beds, high end bed linens, fluffy towels, and bathrooms with spa-like touches. Guests will rave about all of these extras in reviews, so that’s a great place to look to see if the home you are planning to book includes these amenities. Amenities and on-property extras. Amenities our guests request the most are private hot tubs and luxury outdoor seating and BBQ areas. A private hot tub is an amenity the whole family will love and your family grill master will enjoy that outdoor kitchen vibe. We also add local coffee to your home as a way to welcome you and to support our local businesses. When staying in our resort properties, you can look forward to even more amenities, including an on-property playground, a seasonal pool, fitness center, community fire pit, outdoor games area, or Meredith Lodging cruiser bikes depending on the property you choose. Top Tips for Choosing a Work From Home Destination and Preparing for Your Trip Make it easy! Choose a destination that is easily reachable by car. Make it Fun. Choose a location that has lots of activities right outside your door. Accessibility is key to making those school and work breaks (Recess on the beach! Take a bike ride break in Sunriver!) memorable and fun. Location, location, location. Pick a location that places you in the middle of Oregon’s natural beaty, with plenty of fresh air and wide-open spaces right outside your door. Learn on the way AND at your destination. See if there are any sites you can stop and explore safely on the way and make sure to research a little about local historical sites and nature adventures nearby once you arrive. Think about proximity to convenience. Choose a location with a proximity to grocery stores and other conveniences that meet your needs. Hype your destination a little bit before departure. Read up about where you will be going. Let each person choose an activity the whole family can participate in. Having a plan gives everyone something to look forward to! Pack strategically. Remember this is more of a change of scenery than a traditional vacation. You may want to bring more groceries than you usually would to minimize outings, make sure you have the right clothes for the weather forecast. Also consider bringing extra chargers or any other equipment you need to make your WFH/Online school set-up work for you. What to Look for in an Oregon Vacation Rental When Working Remotely/Attending Online School You’ve got bandwidth! Make sure your home has WIFI (99% of Meredith Lodging homes do!) Room to work & Learn. If each person in your party needs to have their own space to work/attend school, be sure to choose a house with enough bedrooms and other workspaces to accommodate that. Many homes have desks in the bedrooms, and you can utilize dining room tables and other tables for workspace, too. A well-equipped kitchen. You will be making lots of meals at home during these times, make sure you have a kitchen and eating area that meets your needs. Traveling with your pod? Make sure each household has dedicated bedrooms and (ideally) a dedicated bathroom for each household and that they are used only by those they are assigned to. Look for homes with outdoor space/outdoor covered spaces you can enjoy. Gathering outside is safe and fun! Look for decks/yards with firepits to keep you cozy – and outdoor hot tubs are always a hit! Book a home with a view! Choose a home with a relaxing view of the ocean, the mountains, the woods, the river, or the golf course – having inspiring views right outside your door makes you relax and feel like you are on vacation, even when you are working. And the short commute to happy hour is enhanced by a beautiful view, too! Look for homes with space for kiddos to play! Many of our homes have pool tables, ping pong tables, foosball – and lots of bikes for family fun. Booking a home with these kinds of spaces puts smiles on those sweet faces! Meredith Lodging’s Central Oregon Headquarters Office is located in Bend, Oregon and our local employees love living in Bend because of all the adventure just outside their door. Many of Bend’s most-loved sites get pretty crowded in the Spring and Summer months, but there are a few places that are remain on our “best-kept-secrets list and we want to share those with our Meredith Lodging family. These are some of our favorite places and we hope they will be yours, too! No Name Lake No Name Lake is a local favorite and as soon as you see the blue-green jade-colored water and its picturesque surroundings you will understand why. The trail to the lake is an easy one and the elevation gain is gradual. It is long, though, and has a short scramble at the end up the creek bed, which accounts for its more difficult category, but other than those two factors, the trek is easy to moderate. Most parts of this hike do not have tree cover, so you will want to pack your hats and sunscreen – and mosquito repellant if going in the summer months. The wildflowers are beautiful in July! Tenas Lakes This 4.9-mile out and back is moderately busy most of the time. The lake is loved by locals and the trail to get there is appropriate for all skill levels. Bird watchers, this hike is for you as its also considered a good birding location. Dogs are allowed on leash. This trip is best taken from June to November. Hidden Forest and Arnold Ice Cave Nothing cooler than an ice cave! See what we did there…This hike is close to Bend and is a 0.8 mile out and back that is a good bet for all skill levels. You will be rewarded with views of beautiful wild flowers and lots of good bird sightings as well as the chance to explore some cool Oregon caves. Please note the road to access the trail is bumpy. East Lake Hot Springs This adventure is within the Newberry Crater recreational area, and is a local favorite because it is less crowded than nearby Paulina Lake Hot Springs. The trail to East Lake Hot Springs is a 3.4 mile moderately trafficked out and back trail located near La Pine, Oregon. Once you reach your destination you will be rewarded with beautiful lake views and incredibly hot springs (100-120 degrees!) and their classic sulfur smell. Locals love to dig their own pools and combine spring water and lake water to get to the perfect temperature. The trail is best used for hiking, walking, nature trips, from May until October. Dogs are allowed. After a day full of adventures, return to your perfect home-base – your Meredith Lodging Bend or Sunriver vacation rental. Our beautiful homes feature well-equipped kitchens, places for backyard BBQs, comfortable beds, and many feature hot tubs, too – everything you need to relax and rest-up for another day full of exploring Central Oregon.
