Oregon Coast’s Biggest Secret is September, October, & November!

Did you know three of the best-kept secrets on the Oregon Coast are September, October, and November? Both locals and visitors know that fall is one of the most beautiful and desirable times to visit the coast. Golden yellow, blood orange, and burgundy hues provide pops of color against Oregon’s signature old-growth evergreens, temperatures are often mild and sunny – and there is the occasional coastal storm that gives you the perfect excuse to spend hours cozied up by the fire at your Meredith Lodging vacation rental.

It is easy to create memories this time of year, too – rain or shine. From whale watching to wine tasting to marveling at the fall foliage on one of the Coast’s many hikes or celebrating Halloween the coastal way, you will find plenty to discover during the autumn months. Looking to plan a memorable fall getaway?

We have put together a list of some of our favorite fall activities on the Oregon Coast:

Hit the Trails

Hiking along the Oregon Coast any time of the year will reward you with stunning views, but with fewer crowds on the trails, fall is a perfect time to get out and explore. Check out 15 iconic hikes here.

Wine Tasting

The Oregon wine scene is not just located in and around the Willamette Valley. The location and temperate climate of the Oregon Coast provides perfect conditions for many varietals. Stop by some of our favorite wineries to sip, savor and see why Oregon winemakers are making their mark on the wine world.

Nehalem Bay Winery

Founded in the historic Mohler Creamery building in 1974, this small, family-owned winery offers a wide selection of fruit wines, as well as traditional red and white grape varietals. Stop in for a taste, and soak in the history of one of the oldest wineries in the State of Oregon and the first winery on the Oregon Coast.

The Winery at Manzanita

Let the afternoon hours slip by at this kid and dog-friendly winery. The wines are produced in small batches here – focusing on quality over quantity. They serve flights, so you can sample all the styles, as well as local craft beer and cider. You can also order DIY smores kit to toast over the fire pits. Order a glass of wine and a charcuterie platter, settle in on an Adirondack chair, and take in the ocean views. Find out more things to do in Manzanita from our Area Guide.

Visit Yaquina Head Lighthouse

A trip down Highway 101 is not complete without stopping to view some of its historic lighthouses. Anytime of the year is great to visit these iconic beacons, but a trip in the fall can offer dramatic coastal skies, whale spotting, and less crowds. One of our favorite stops is the Yaquina Head Lighthouse. Standing 93 feet tall, this lighthouse has been guiding ships and their cargo along the west coast since it was first lit in 1873. Visitors can enjoy a visit to the interpretive center which features exhibits on seabirds and local marine life, as well as history about the Yaquina headland. There are also tide pools to explore and scenic trails to discover, making for an easy outing the whole family will enjoy.

Savor Seasonal Treats at Local Farmers Markets

Come see what is in harvest! Local vendors will be offering a wide variety of seasonal produce, cheeses, flowers, artisan foods, crafts, and more! Support local communities as you enjoy fresh and fine food, shopping, and live entertainment. We encourage you to check opening times and dates as events are subject to change.

Whale Watching

Fall is a great time for whale watching, as the resident population of 200+ gray whales cruise the Oregon coast from June to mid-November, often less than one mile from shore! Some of the top places to spot the spouts of these majestic mammals are Cape Meares Lighthouse, Cape Kiwanda, and Neahkahnie Mountain Viewpoint.
