About the Lighthouse

Did you know that the Yaquina Head Lighthouse is the tallest lighthouse in Oregon? At a whopping 93 feet, it is a spectacular sight to behold. Over 370,000 bricks were used to build the structure, which was completed in the late 1800’s. The light has been active since 1873, when the days of oil burning wicks were commonplace. Located at the westernmost point of the Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area, the lighthouse has withstood the test of weather and time. Now, there is a fully automated Fresnel lens that flashes 24 hours a day, guiding ships safely past the rugged Oregon coastline.

Admission and Tours

Today, visitors from near and far are drawn to Yaquina Head and its famous lighthouse. If you are planning a trip to the Oregon Coast, you must stop by for a tour. Your local guide will tell you about the history of the lighthouse, how it is operated, and stories from long ago. As you ascend the winding, 114-step staircase, it’s easy to imagine that you’ve been transported to a previous era yourself. Don’t forget to bring your camera! You’ll find several opportunities to snap a family photo while you are there.

Tours are available on select days on a first-come, first-serve basis. You’ll need to pick up tickets at the Interpretive Center, which is open from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. We also recommend arriving at the Interpretive Center at least 15 minutes before your tour begins. Admission to the park is just $7 for cars, and the park grounds are open from 8 a.m. until sunset. Be sure to check out their website for more information about tours and upcoming events at the lighthouse. They often feature family-friendly events throughout the year.

Explore the Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area

After you tour the lighthouse, make sure to spend some time exploring the Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area. The park is home to several hiking trails, tide pools, basalt cliffs, coves, and a unique black rock beach. It is also a prime destination for wildlife-viewing and whale-watching. Grey whales migrate from December – May, but they can be seen throughout the year at Yaquina Head. You may even spot harbor seals, peregrine falcons, or other seabirds!
