Top Swimming Lakes Near Bend Where You Can Live That Lake Life Bend is home to numerous stunning lakes, perfect for hiking, taking a dip on warmer days (or braving a dip on colder days, too!), and capturing that perfect family photo, or selfie. If you’re looking for things to do in Bend, visiting the many alpine lakes in the summer should probably go toward the top of your itinerary! A stay in one of our beautiful Bend or Mt. Here are some of our favorite alpine lakes for exploring: Todd Lake This pristine lake is nestled at the base of Broken Top, providing visitors with stunning views of wide-open meadows, mountains, and summer wildflowers. A 1.5-mile trail, suitable for all ages, will guide you around the lake. Keep your eyes open for hundreds of baby frogs that hatch here early summer. Note: the trail is only open during the summer months.  Paulina Lake Situated at the basin of the Newberry Volcano caldera, Paulina Lake boasts breathtaking views reflecting thousands of years of volcanic activity. The day use area offers picnic areas and swimming beaches. The water comes mostly from snowmelt, so it can be chilly for swimming in the early season. Luckily, the Paulina Lake Loop Trail leads you to some geothermal hot springs on the north shore.   Moraine Lake This high mountain lake is easy to access and is not too far from Bend, making it the ideal family outing. The lake is not very deep, so late August/early September, the water is warmer – perfect for taking a dip as you soak up the views!  Twin Lakes The 3-mile hike into Twin Lakes will take your breath away with meadows of wildflowers, miles of old growth Douglas Firs, and views of turquoise water. Please note: This trail is currently closed. Please check this link for current updates.   Sparks Lake Just off the Cascade Lakes Highway, Sparks Lake boasts stunning views of Broken Top, South Sister, and Bachelor Butte, a perfect backdrop for your family photo. Elk Lake Elk Lake, with the Three Sisters towering over the north end of the lake and Mt. Bachelor dominating the eastern horizon, has a beautiful backdrop. It is not a high-traffic fishing destination, but it is so clear that you can see all the way to the bottom from any area on the surface. A couple of staff members in our Bend office recommended this recipe for scalloped potatoes and wow – it’s a game changer! Takes a little bit of time to make but is always a hit with the whole table. A member of our leadership team swears by the Williams Sonoma “Willie-Bird” pre-brined turkey and after trying it, we have to say – we agree! It is a bit of a splurge, and a delicious one, too! She has been bringing it to her celebrations for 10 years at the strong request of her guests! Meredith Lodging’s Oregon Coast vacation rental owners swiftly stepped-up to help house evacuees As the Oregon Wildfires raged across the state last week, the Echo Creek fire advanced on Lincoln County at a pace so fast many local residents were left with only minutes to flee their homes and evacuate to safety. Local Lincoln County families found themselves running for their lives, some with just the clothes on their backs. As the LEAVE NOW order went into effect, the teams at Meredith Lodging reached out to their Owners to ask for assistance, and these Oregon Coast vacation rental owners swiftly stepped-up to help. “In addition to our Firefighters and First Responders, the other heroes of this story are the Owners of Meredith Lodging vacation homes. They immediately, and in large numbers, offered their homes, free of cost, as safe respite to local citizens, First Responders and Meredith Lodging employees in need of shelter,” commented Meredith Lodging Founder Meredith Oksenholt. “Within hours, local residents went from fleeing their homes to being able to land in a safe place…a beautiful home a short distance away where they could gather together and begin to recover from this terrifying event. Owners with homes all along the Oregon Coast – from Waldport to Seaside, welcomed our displaced community members. We cannot overstate the impact of this gift from our Owners – they are the reason we were able to secure the safety of all of our employees as well as many local citizens and First Responders.” Thanks to the Owners offering up their homes, Meredith Lodging was able to begin placing people within an hour of the LEAVE NOW evacuation order. These displaced local residents and families described a horrific evacuation situation amidst rapidly advancing wildfires, their homes being surrounded by fire and having only minutes to flee their homes. Road Trip to Yachats/Waldport – Best Places to Stay, See, Eat and Discover Stunning coastline views, breathtaking sites like Cape Perpetua, Thor’s Well and sunsets over the Alsea Bay Bridge. Award-winning craft beer, popular local restaurants and coffee shops, and a bustling farmer’s market – the beloved beach towns of Yachats and Waldport have something for everyone. Tucked into the southern-most part of Lincoln County these towns are slightly less frequented than larger cities to the North, and that makes all the difference. The drive to these two cities is a beautiful one, and opportunities for scenic vistas and memorable stops abound. We have assembled a few of our favorite stops to make along the way and focused them toward the area South of Lincoln City and north of Waldport/Yachats – and an area rich with natural beauty and an impressive marine science center. Stops to Make Along the Way to Yachats/Waldport: Yaquina Head Lighthouse and Cobble Beach A stop by the Yaquina Head Lighthouse and Cobble Beach is the perfect place to learn a little about the Lighthouse’s historical past and do a little exploring. The lighthouse began operations in August of 1873, when Head Keeper Fayette Crosby climbed the 114 steps to light the wick of the oil burning fixed white light. At that time, the light was on display from sunrise to sunset. Today the lighthouse runs a fully automated Fresnel lens light on commercial power, and it flashes a unique pattern of 2 seconds on, 2 seconds off, 2 seconds on, 14 seconds off, 24 hours a day. The area around the lighthouse is just as interesting as the light inside – and it is a favored spot for natural wildlife. Situated on the migratory path for Gray Whales, visitors may spot them just offshore in early December and January on their travels South – or again in March and April as they return North toward the Bering Sea. Birdwatcher’s also have a lot to be excited about at Yaquina Head. One of the West Coast’s largest nesting colonies of common murre’s resides there along with Brandt’s and pelagic cormorants, western gulls, and bald eagles. Yaquina Head is also home to a mated pair of peregrine falcons, easily spotted most days in the cliffs above the Interpretive Center. For beachcombers, a stroll around the Cobble Beach Tidepools is a must. The beach is named for the dark, smooth rounded stones that cover it and it is an excellent place to explore tidepools. No matter where you explore near Yaquina Head, you will find staff and volunteers nearby to help you make the most of your visit. PLEASE NOTE: Summer 2020, parts of Yaquina Head recreational area are currently closed so check for their hours of availability.
